Government pauses NMC’s MBBS seat-capping proposal; deferment till 2026

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has postponed its MBBS seat capping proposal for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 academic years. Union Health Minister J P Nadda said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

New Delhi: The proposal of capping MBBS seats by the National Medical Commission (NMC) has been deferred for the academic years 2024-25 and 2025-26. In a written reply, Union Health Minister J P Nadda has shared the information in the Rajya Sabha.

The health minister was responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha regarding the cap on MBBS seats. The government has noted that the NMC in 2023 issued a directive to cap MBBS seats at 100 per 10 lakh population in a state. This directive will impact the southern states, including Kerala, which have already exceeded this ratio, and if the NMC has permanently withdrawn.

Over 1.28 lakh MBBS seats in India

In a response to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patil, has said that there are a total of 1,28,875 MBBS seats country, of which 65,193 are government and 63,682 are private. A total of 80,291 seats for Postgraduate medical education. 

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is vested with the responsibility to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) for admission to MBBS and BDS seats in the country. Candidates who qualify in the NEET UG exam will be eligible to participate in the counselling conducted by the MCC.
