As India celebrates Republic Day 2026, the announcement of 131 Padma Awards has sparked a heated debate. From veteran leaders like V.S. Achuthanandan and Shibu Soren to cultural icons, the awards span ideologies and states. But opposition parties allege “electionization,” pointing to disproportionate representation from poll-bound states. BJP defends the honours as merit-based and depoliticized, while Congress questions timing and political optics.

His unopposed election was confirmed after a day-long nomination process at the BJP headquarters, where he stood as the sole candidate.Nabin’s ascent to the top organisational post received broad consensus, evidenced by the 37 sets of nomination papers filed in his favour, including signatures from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, and Amit Shah, as well as several Chief Ministers. This unanimous support underscores a deliberate transition towards younger leadership. Having previously served as National Working President since December, his election formalises the party’s strategic move towards renewal and preparation for upcoming political challenges.

Spain has been plunged into a state of national mourning following a horrific collision between two high-speed trains in the southern region of Andalusia. The disaster, which unfolded late Sunday evening, has claimed at least 21 lives and left more than 70 people injured, as rescuers battle "twisted metal" to reach survivors trapped in the wreckage. The derailment occurred near Adamuz on a stretch of track connecting Malaga and Madrid. According to the rail operator Adif, a service travelling toward the capital derailed for reasons yet unknown, veering onto the opposite track and slamming into an oncoming train. The impact was so violent that both trains derailed, with several carriages plunging four meters down a steep embankment, news agency AFP reported.

India has received an invitation from US President Donald Trump to join his proposed "Board of Peace" initiative, aimed at resolving global conflicts, starting with Gaza. This outreach occurs at a sensitive juncture in India-US relations, marked by unresolved trade talks and US tariffs of up to 50% on Indian exports. The "Board of Peace," unveiled on 15 January as part of Trump's 20-point plan for Gaza, is envisioned as a transitional governing authority to end hostilities, stabilise the region, and reconstruct governance systems.President Trump described it as a bold new push to turn dreams of peace into reality, bringing together influential global leaders. India's Ministry of External Affairs has not yet issued an official response, and its decision is being closely watched for geopolitical and trade implications. Around 60 countries have reportedly been invited, with Pakistan indicating openness to engagement.

Maharashtra's political arena is once again witnessing "resort politics" following the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The Mahayuti alliance, comprising the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is embroiled in a power struggle over the crucial Mumbai Mayors post.Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde recently arrived at Mumbais Taj Lands End hotel, where 29 newly elected municipal councillors from his Shiv Sena faction are currently staying. While officially described as a two-day workshop to train councillors on BMC functioning, sources indicate a deeper political manoeuvre. The Shinde faction is reportedly pushing for its candidate to hold the Mayor's position for the initial two and a half years of the term. This demand is linked to the upcoming 2026 birth centenary of Balasaheb Thackeray, aiming to send a positive message to party workers statewide and influence future assembly and Lok Sabha elections.Conversely, BJP sources suggest that the Mayors post will ultimately remain with the BJP, with a final decision pending Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's return to Mumbai from Davos. The intensified negotiations highlight the high political stakes for both parties ahead of future electoral contests.

A senior Congress MLA from Madhya Pradesh, Phool Singh Baraiya, has sparked significant outrage following a series of deeply offensive and casteist remarks concerning rape. In a widely circulated video, Mr Baraiya presented a theory suggesting men commit rape when distracted by a womans beauty. He controversially added that Dalit, Adivasi, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Class women, despite not being considered beautiful, are still raped due to alleged scriptural references. He quoted a passage suggesting intercourse with a woman of a certain caste could offer the reward of a pilgrimage. Furthermore, Mr Baraiya asserted that a man cannot rape a woman without her consent. These comments, which surfaced during an interview, quickly went viral, prompting widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded strict action, with spokesperson Sambit Patra calling for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to sack the MLA. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav condemned the statements as "poisonous and socially divisive".While the Congress party has distanced itself, stating the remarks reflect Mr Baraiyas personal views and asking him for clarification, the MLA has reportedly refused to retract his statements, continuing to justify them amidst the ongoing controversy.

US President Donald Trump has reignited debate over Greenlands future, renewing his demand for US control over the territory. Citing Greenlands strategic location and mineral resources, Trump has described it as vital for US national security and warned against growing Russian or Chinese influence, stating that "all options remain on the table."These remarks coincide with talks at the White House involving US Vice President J.D. Vance and the Foreign Ministers of Denmark and Greenland. Despite Trumps assertions, Denmark and Greenland have unequivocally stated that the island is not for sale, characterising any threats of force as reckless.Their stance has received support from several European Union countries. In response to the escalating geopolitical interest in the Arctic, Sweden has announced plans to deploy military officers to Greenland at Denmarks request. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson indicated that this move reflects enhanced coordination among Nordic and NATO allies on Arctic security. Both Denmark and Greenland are also intensifying their military presence and cooperation with NATO, including expanded defence exercises scheduled until 2026, highlighting the regions increasing strategic importance.

India's ambition to host the Olympic Games is currently facing significant scrutiny following strong criticisms from international athletes regarding the countrys sports infrastructure and playing conditions.World number two badminton player, Denmarks Anders Antonsen, notably withdrew from the India Open Super 750 in New Delhi for the third consecutive year, citing incompatible air quality and pollution levels unfit for elite sport. He publicly shared his reasons and was prepared to pay a $5,000 fine.Adding to these concerns, fellow Danish shuttler Mia Blichfeldt described the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, currently hosting the India Open, as dirty, unhealthy, cold, damp, and poorly maintained. She highlighted players having to warm up indoors in winter jackets due to unregulated internal conditions. While the Badminton Association of India, through Secretary General Sanjay Mishra, dismissed these as "personal health sensitivities," and Indian players like PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth defended the venues, these incidents have revived long-standing concerns about maintenance, ventilation, temperature control, and hygiene, ultimately challenging Indias image as a prospective Olympic host.

Rahul Gandhis recent rebranding as Thalaiva in Tamil Nadu marks a significant cultural and political manoeuvre for the Congress leader. This rebrand, traditionally reserved for cinematic icons like Rajinikanth and Vijay, coincides with his vocal support for actor-politician Vijay's film Janagan, which faces censorship issues. Gandhi has framed the Central Board of Film Certifications (CBFC) actions against Janagan as an attack on Tamil identity, aligning Congress with regional sentiments. This strategic outreach, particularly during the Pongal festival, appears to serve a dual purpose: to project Gandhi as a mass leader connected to Tamil culture and to potentially forge new alliances. However, it also creates tension within the existing DMK-Congress alliance. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has firmly stated its opposition to power-sharing, insisting on single-party rule in Tamil Nadu since 1967. The political landscape is therefore intricate, with Congress appearing to test new ground and extend an olive branch to Vijay’s outfit, TVK, while navigating its long-standing partnership with the DMK ahead of impending elections.

Iran is currently experiencing its most severe internal unrest in years, characterised by widespread protests, significant casualties, and a deepening economic crisis. Officials have acknowledged nearly 2,000 deaths, including security personnel, and over 10,000 detentions, though unverified reports suggest higher figures. These demonstrations, now in their third week, are primarily fuelled by a collapsing economy, soaring prices, job losses, and a depreciating currency, posing a formidable challenge to the clerical leadership. The crisis extends beyond Irans borders. US President Donald Trump has threatened military action and imposed 25% tariffs on countries trading with Iran, including India. This has led to substantial pressure on Iran’s economic partners, with India suspending basmati rice shipments, negatively impacting domestic agricultural markets.Despite international warnings and internal strife, Irans leadership maintains readiness for any US action, while many Iranians abroad express fear and concern over internet blackouts and the harsh government crackdown.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has escalated the political and legal standoff in West Bengal by approaching the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing in the alleged I-PAC coal scam case. The central probe agency filed an Article 32 petition, contending that its investigation into the matter was obstructed by the West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The EDs plea claims that its fundamental right to conduct a fair and independent investigation has been curtailed by state machinery. It has further sought a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged obstruction incidents. In response, the West Bengal government had previously filed a caveat in the Supreme Court, urging that no one-sided decision be made without hearing their side. The state government has also filed two First Information Reports (FIRs) against ED officials, one alleging document theft during raids and another citing harassment.

India has moved to tighten its grip on cryptocurrency trading, with the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) under the Finance Ministry rolling out stringent new Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Know Your Customer (KYC) norms for crypto exchanges operating within the country. These updated guidelines aim to enhance security and combat illicit financial activities.Under the revised framework, users are now required to complete a live selfie verification featuring liveness detection, specifically designed to prevent the use of static images and deepfakes. Crypto exchanges must also implement geo-tagging during user onboarding, recording latitude, longitude, IP address, and timestamps.Mandatory penny-drop verification for bank accounts has been introduced, alongside the submission of a Permanent Account Number (PAN) and a secondary government identification such as Aadhaar, a passport, or a voter ID. Email and mobile One-Time Password (OTP) verifications are also compulsory. The FIU has issued warnings against high-risk activities, including Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), privacy tokens, mixers, and tumblers, citing serious concerns regarding money laundering and terror financing.Exchanges are now mandated to preserve user data for a minimum of five years, with high-risk clients subject to more frequent KYC reviews. While India does not recognise cryptocurrency as legal tender, it is subject to taxation and will now be more closely tracked.

Tension flared in Old Delhi after a group of miscreants attempted to break police barricades put up during the drive. Several protesters even resorted to stone pelting during a demolition drive near Turkman Gate.Delhi Police said the situation arose when MCD teams began removing encroachments close to a mosque in Old Delhi. To control the escalating situation, police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. MCD officials clarified that the mosque structure itself was not touched.

A significant diplomatic confrontation is unfolding in South America, stemming from remarks by US President Donald Trump and a defiant response from Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Following Trump's suggestions that Colombia could face military action akin to a recent operation in Venezuela, President Petro directly challenged the US, stating, "come get me, Im waiting for you here."Petro, a former guerrilla fighter, warned that any military aggression would ignite widespread resistance, asserting that US bombing would transform farmers into guerrillas and that detaining him would unleash the "Jaguar of the people." He emphasised that while he abandoned weapons decades ago, he would take them up again for his countrys defence if compelled.Trump's comments, which included labelling Colombias leadership as "sick" and suggesting a military operation "sounds good," have notably heightened regional tensions. Colombias Foreign Ministry has sought to de-escalate the situation, reaffirming its commitment to diplomacy and rejecting the use of force between states. The wider context of the US operation in Venezuela, which reportedly led to the capture of Nicola Maduro, fuels anxieties about further interventions in Latin America.

Israel has given its approval for the rollout of 4G mobile services for Palestinians residing in the West Bank, marking a significant advancement in regional telecommunications. This long-awaited upgrade comes after years of delays, partly attributed to the conflict in Gaza. The decision stems from management agreements signed by Palestinian mobile operators Jawwal and Ooredoo, in collaboration with Swedish technology firm Ericsson. These agreements received clearance from Israeli authorities, paving the way for the implementation of fourth-generation cell phone services in the West Bank. The Israeli Communications Ministry anticipates that the full transition from 3G to 4G will take approximately four to six months before services become fully operational. However, this upgrade will not extend to the Gaza Strip, where mobile networks will continue to operate on the older, slower 2G service. This development is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and internet speeds for users in the West Bank.

Hundreds of tourists find themselves unexpectedly stranded on the remote Yemeni island of Socotra following the halting of flights. This disruption stems from a deepening political rift between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), nations backing opposing groups in Yemens ongoing civil war.Approximately 600 visitors, who had flown to Socotra for its unique beauty, are now unable to depart. The crisis unfolded after the UAE withdrew its troops from Yemen last week under a deadline from Saudi Arabia, subsequently impacting air travel to the island.Italian tourist Tiziana Casanato voiced the frustrations of many, stating that while a short delay might be acceptable, the prolonged situation is causing significant problems, affecting their return to work and other commitments.Socotra, despite being a haven of tranquillity during mainland conflicts, is now at the centre of a geopolitical predicament affecting innocent travellers.

Iran is experiencing its tenth consecutive day of widespread protests, driven by a severe economic crisis marked by spiralling inflation and a plummeting national currency. The unrest, which began amongst shopkeepers in Tehran's Grand Bazaar, has now expanded to cities including Abadan and Malekshahi, intensifying with clashes between protesters and security forces.Eyewitness accounts and social media footage depict confrontations, with gas canisters reportedly used by protesters amidst heavy police deployment. Rights groups such as Hengaw and HRANA claim death tolls ranging from 25 to 29, including minors, and over a thousand arrests.Iranian authorities have acknowledged economic hardships but attribute the unrest to foreign influences, reporting two security personnel deaths and over a dozen injuries. While President Masoud Pezeshkian has pledged reforms to stabilise the economy and protect purchasing power, including subsidy adjustments, the protests show signs of broadening beyond economic grievances to encompass political frustrations against the clerical leadership. The situation underscores the deep economic and social tensions gripping the nation.

A public health catastrophe has unfolded in Bhagirathpura, Indore, where contaminated tap water has led to the deaths of 14 residents and the hospitalisation of over 200 others. The tragedy, which began as 2025 drew to a close, saw people falling critically ill with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, and severe weakness.Among the deceased is six-month-old Avyan Sahu, whose family claims their repeated concerns about foul-smelling, dirty water were disregarded by authorities for weeks. Investigations have revealed several critical lapses, including a leakage in the main water pipeline in Bhagirathpura and a newly constructed toilet dumping waste directly into a pit located above the water supply line.Improper waste management, lacking a septic tank, is believed to have caused sewage to mix with the drinking water. This contamination occurred near the main line, affecting a wide area. Residents allege that their complaints to local authorities were met with inaction, prompting protests and outrage.

During the 1971 India-Pakistan War, the Battle of Basantar witnessed an act of unparalleled bravery by Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal of the Poona Horse regiment. At just 21 years old, he embodied courage, refusing to abandon his tank even after it sustained multiple hits and caught fire. His unwavering resolve was pivotal in stopping a critical Pakistani armoured breakthrough.Khetarpals heroism ensured the Indian Army successfully held the crucial Basantar bridgehead, a strategic location near the NH 44 road connecting India to Kashmir. Despite orders to bail out, he famously declared, "No sir, I wont abandon my tank. I have my last gun still working."He continued fighting until his martyrdom, becoming the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, Indias highest military honour. His sacrifice continues to resonate, symbolizing supreme dedication and an enduring legacy of bravery for the nation.

Fresh concerns over minority safety in Bangladesh have emerged following a brutal attack on a Hindu businessman in Shariatpur. On 31 December, Khokon Chandra Das, a 50-year-old owner of a medicine store, was attacked by a mob while returning home. He was assaulted with sharp weapons, doused with petrol, and set on fire. Gravely injured, Mr Das escaped by jumping into a pond and was later rescued by locals, eventually being shifted to Dhaka for treatment. This incident is particularly alarming as it marks the fourth targeted assault on Hindus in Bangladesh within a mere fifteen days. Authorities have identified two suspects in the attack on Mr Das, with investigations underway to ascertain the motive. In a separate development, a 35-year-old lawyer, Naeem Kibria, was beaten to death in Dhakas Basundhara residential area following an alleged road rage altercation. Police have confirmed the death and initiated an investigation. These incidents collectively underscore significant law and order challenges currently facing Bangladesh.

"Ikkis," directed by Sriram Raghavan, marks one of the initial major Hindi cinematic releases for 2026. The film distinguishes itself not through loud spectacle but via profound, quiet emotion, narrating the true story of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, India’s youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. It meticulously weaves together themes of personal sacrifice, duty, and the enduring human cost of warfare.Dharmendra delivers a particularly poignant performance as Brigadier M.L. Khetarpal, adding significant gravitas and warmth to the narrative in what is described as his final screen appearance. Jaideep Ahlawat further enriches the story with a performance grounded in quiet intensity.Agastya Nanda, portraying Arun Khetarpal, offers a sincere and confident depiction. He carefully avoids overplaying heroism, instead presenting a composed and emotionally honest portrayal that captures both the courage and vulnerability inherent in a young soldier. Nandas convincing presence in uniform and his growth throughout the film signify a notable progression in his acting career."Ikkis" is celebrated for its distinctive human touch, incorporating moments of reflection and understated emotions, prioritising duty over overt drama. It is a film that resonates due to its heartfelt nature rather than its volume.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has frozen assets valued at approximately Rs 192 crore, belonging to ZO Games Private Limited, a wholly owned Indian subsidiary of Winzo Private Limited. The frozen assets comprise bank balances, fixed deposit receipts, and mutual funds. This action stems from an ongoing money laundering investigation conducted by the EDs Bengaluru zonal office.Searches were carried out at the accounting firm premises associated with Winzo Private Limited on December 30, 2025, under Section 17 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act of 2002. The EDs investigation has, so far, indicated that Winzo Private Limited generated proceeds of crime totalling around Rs 802 crore.A significant portion of these alleged illicit funds was reportedly transferred from India to the USA and Singapore, disguised as overseas investments. The probe continues as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the alleged financial irregularities.

The Andhra Pradesh government has initiated a policy allowing postgraduate Ayurvedic doctors, trained in Shalya and Shalakya Tantra, to independently perform 58 surgical procedures. These procedures encompass 39 general surgical and 19 ENT and eye-related interventions. The policy, cleared by Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav on 23 December, has generated a significant national debate concerning patient safety and medical training standards. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has strongly opposed the directive, contending that modern surgery necessitates extensive training in anatomy, anaesthesia, emergency care, and post-operative management, which they assert is only acquired through MBBS-MS or MCh qualifications. The IMA has also warned against "mixopathy," defined as blending medical systems without equivalent standards, which they believe could dilute accountability and endanger patients.Conversely, proponents argue that central regulations already recognise surgical training within Ayurvedic postgraduate courses. Dr. Prasanna Narasimha Rao, Director of SDM Institute of Ayurveda, highlighted that Shalya Tantra, a branch of Ayurveda, has historical roots in surgery dating back thousands of years. The debate continues, with related rules still pending before the Supreme Court of India.

Varanasi police have significantly stepped up security and crowd management efforts in anticipation of New Year 2026 celebrations, particularly around the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple. With an expected daily influx of 400,000 to 500,000 devotees, comprehensive plans are in place to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow for both residents and visitors.A major initiative includes declaring the area from Maidagin to Godowlia, encompassing the temple vicinity, as a no-vehicle zone. This restriction applies to all vehicles, including two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, and even VIP and police vehicles, making the route exclusively for pedestrians.Barricades have been installed at various points to facilitate orderly movement, drawing parallels to arrangements made during the Mahakumbh, which saw up to one million daily visitors. For visitors arriving from outside the city, dedicated parking facilities have been established at Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya. From this point, located approximately 1.5 to 2 kilometres from the temple, devotees will need to utilise e-rickshaws or auto-rickshaws for onward travel, with larger vehicles remaining at the designated parking. These proactive measures underscore Varanasi polices commitment to safe New Year celebrations.

New Delhi witnessed significant travel chaos on Monday as dense fog caused major disruptions at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). Operations were severely impacted, leading to 128 flight cancellations, comprising 64 departures and 64 arrivals. Additionally, eight flights were diverted to alternative airports due to critically low visibility conditions. The widespread impact extended to nearly 470 flights experiencing delays, affecting thousands of passengers planning to travel through one of Indias busiest aviation hubs.Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the airport operator, reported improved runway visibility by 2:00 p.m., allowing flight operations to resume smoothly. However, a caution was issued regarding potential further disruptions to arrivals and departures, contingent on weather conditions at destination airports and the persisting foggy conditions across northern India, as noted by IndiGo. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines before travelling.
