As the winter session of the Karnataka Legislature commences in Belagavi, the opposition BJP is staging a significant farmers protest today. The demonstration, planned outside the Suvarna Soudha, anticipates a turnout of nearly 20,000 farmers, organised by the Belagavi district unit of the BJP.

The agitation is set to highlight a range of critical agricultural concerns. Key demands include higher support prices for essential crops like maize and sugarcane, the establishment of accessible procurement centres, and addressing pressing issues surrounding the Tungabhadra Dams crest gate.

The BJP alleges that the state government has neglected the welfare of farmers and intends to use this large-scale protest to intensify pressure during the ongoing legislative session. Senior opposition figures, including R. Ashoka, BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra, and Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, along with several party MLAs, are expected to participate, underscoring the protests political significance.
