Ernakulam: In a major infrastructure pushover for the metro development in Kerala, the state government has sanctioned the release of ₹50 crore as part of its equity contribution for Phase 2 of the Kochi Metro Rail project.
The second phase will extend the metro line from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Infopark in Kakkanad.
According to the order issued on November 26, the revised administrative sanction has been granted for the project at a total cost of ₹1,957.05 crore, of which the state government’s share is ₹1,571.05 crore.
Earlier, the government had approved the release of ₹190.22 crore towards the state’s equity contribution and transferred the amount to the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) account at the Sub Treasury, Ernakulam. Following this, the KMRL Managing Director requested the release of the remaining equity contribution to meet ongoing financial commitments and avoid delays in the project.
Considering the request, the government has now authorised the additional ₹50 crore. KMRL has been directed to regularise the expenditure through reappropriation of savings or supplementary demand for grants before the close of the current financial year.
Train operations through Aluva stretch disrupted after train derailed
Train operations through the Aluva stretch were disrupted after a locomotive derailed at Kalamassery on Friday evening. No casualties have been reported, officials confirmed. The locomotive collided with an electric pole after derailing during shunting operations around 2.50 pm. A major tragedy was averted as no other trains were passing through the section at the time.
Currently, the Eranad Express to Thiruvananthapuram and the Guruvayur–Ernakulam passenger train are halted at Aluva and Angamaly railway stations, respectively. The Thiruvananthapuram North–Indore Weekly Express has been delayed by one hour and 30 minutes.
Southern Railway has announced that the train services are expected to be restored by 5.30 pm.
“A shunting locomotive suffered a failure at the Kalamassery yard during shunting operations. Restoration activities are in full swing, and top priority is being accorded to ensure the smooth movement of all train services. Complete restoration is expected by 17.30 hrs,” the Railways said in a communiqué.
