New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated 184 newly built Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament (MPs) at Delhi's Baba Kharak Singh Marg.
The flats have been constructed to address the problem of inadequate housing for MPs, as it is currently experiencing a state of acute shortage—the projects are aimed to give the MPs modern, eco-friendly homes in a vertical housing format.
During the inauguration of the flats, PM Modi planted a Sindoor sapling at the premises. Also, he talked with the workers involved in the construction and addressed the gathering. Among others who attended the occasion were Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, and Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power Manohar Lal.
During the inauguration of the flats, PM Modi said, "Our MPs will face no issues in the new residences and will be able to focus more on their work. In these multi-storey buildings, more than 180 MPs will live together. Like I previously said, the rent of the ministries functioning from rented buildings would cost the government nearly Rs 1500 crores annually."
He added, "Similarly, the government expenses were very high in the absence of an adequate number of MP residences. Despite a shortage of MP residences, no new residence was constructed from 2014 to 2024. We took this work as a campaign. Around 350 MP residences have been built since 2014."
The flats are a self-sufficient facility, and have all the modern amenities to meet all the requirements of MPs. Each flat has around 5,000 square feet of carpet area. There are dedicated offices, staff accommodation, and residential places. The buildings are earthquake-resistant and have an extensive security system. These flats are reportedly more spacious than the Type-VIII bungalows.
