The father of the Durgapur rape survivor countered West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, saying that his daughter had not gone out after midnight. He clarified that she was raped between 8 pm and 9 pm on Friday. Earlier the West Bengal CM had faced criticism for saying that th woman was raped because she chose to go out late at night.
New Delhi: The father of the 23-year-old medical student who was gangraped in West Bengal's Durgapur on Monday criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, for her insensitive remarks regarding his daughter. He clarified that his daughter was not out at 12:30 am as claimed by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) boss.
CM made false claims: Father of Durgapur rape survivor
CM Mamata Banerjee had on Sunday said that the girl was out of her college campus with a male friend at 12:30 am. She had questioned what the woman was doing outside so late at night. Her words led to harsh criticism from all over, including netizens and opposition parties.
Now the survivor's father has also questioned the CM. He said, "My daughter was sexually assaulted between 8pm and 9pm on Friday. Yet the CM falsely claimed that the incident happened past midnight."
He also criticised Banerjee's comments that women should be cautious while venturing out at night. He said, "Despite being a woman herself, she made an insensitive remark that women should not venture out past midnight."
Odisha government's response to rape
Meanwhile the Odisha government had sent a team to West Bengal to take stock of the investigations in the rape case. The team expressed satisfaction at the progress made in the case so far. The police team from the home state of the survivor came after her parents alleged laxity in the probe by the West Bengal Police.
Earlier CM Mohan Charan Manjhi had talked to the survivor's parents. He. promised all help to her from the state government.
The father of the girl had requested the CM that she be admitted to a medical college in Odisha itself. He said that he did not feel that his daughter would be safe in West Bengal. He claimed a danger to her life also in the state.
Meanwhile, CM Mamata Banerjee has said that she was misquoted on the entire matter. She blamed the media for allegedly distorting her words. She said, "The media distorted my words. You ask me a question, I answer it, and then you distort it. Do not try this kind of politics."
