New Delhi: The morning in Milan is not usual today, with the corners of Via Borgonuovo mourning from yesterday. Giorgio Armani, the man who redefined the fashion world with his modern elegance, passed away at the age of 91 yesterday, 4 September 2025, after a long struggle with illness. The Armani Group released the official news.

Today, Armani is not merely a name stitched into the lining of a suit; he is the suit. It’s an entire empire that believes in the true elegance of speaking softly and being heard rather than shouting out loudly. Giorgio Armani’s journey remains one of fashion’s most defining stories: a young man with a lot of dreams worked as a window dresser and then built a global brand with his determination. Let us have a look at his journey.

Early life of Giorgio Armani

Also regarded as ‘Re Giorgio’, which translates into King Giorgio, Giorgio Armani was born on July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy. He was the son of an accountant. His family forced him to walk down the conventional path of studying medicine. After initially pursuing medicine, he soon dropped it, knowing his passions lie somewhere.

He began his career in 1957 as a buyer at Milan’s La Rinascente department store, where he discovered his love for fashion and style. After that, he worked for Nino Cerruti as a menswear designer. His big breakthrough came in 1957, when he launched a small store with the support of his friend Sergio Galeotti.

Giorgio Armani’s path to success

What worked well for Armani is his unstructured jackets in the menswear line. His jackets spoke not out of boardroom rigidity, but of quiet, confident power. The lightweight fabrics that he used for stitching were disregarded as ‘feminine,’ but the same fabric helped him gain his ‘King of Blazer’ title later.

Soon after, the Armani label started to expand to womenswear, perfumes, jeans, Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange, and even couture with Armani Prive. Armani turned into an empire when the label started to design uniforms for the Olympics, collaborated with Samsung on luxury electronics, and had the opportunity to dress the big names of Hollywood.

The timeless legacy of Giorgio Armani

Armani was a man of many firsts. He was the first man to livestream a fashion show. One of the noteworthy steps that he took was the ban of underweight models with a dangerously low BMI for his fashion shows. In 2007, his Armani Prive spring/summer collection became the first haute fashion show to broadcast live online, with Microsoft’s MSN.

The tragedy of Giorgio Armani's passing away came in the year when his Armani label was celebrating its 50th anniversary. Now, the planned show ‘Pinacota di Brera’ at the Milan Fashion Week will showcase the brilliant work of Giorgia Armani as a tribute to the man and his work.

For some, Armani was someone who shattered the glass ceiling, and for others, he was the embodiment of consistency and persistence. Although many fashion designers have reshaped modern dressing, no one could do it like Armani. For half a century, Armani’s name was not stitched only on the clothes, but it stitched a culture that will live forever now.
