Elon Musk’s xAI cuts 500 AI tutor jobs, plans 10x hiring of specialist roles
Elon Musk's AI startup xAI has laid off 500 members of its data annotation team, about one-third of the workforce. The company says it will scale back generalist tutor roles while hiring domain experts in STEM, finance, and medicine to support its Grok chatbot.
New Delhi: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI has carried out major layoffs, cutting around 500 members from its data annotation team. The decision was communicated to employees on Friday night through internal emails, according to a report by Business Insider.
The company explained that it was making a "strategic pivot,” scaling back its generalist AI tutor workforce and focusing heavily on specialist roles. The layoffs represent nearly one-third of xAI’s 1,500-person annotation team, which is responsible for labeling and preparing data to train Grok, the company’s chatbot.
Internal message and employee impact
Business Insider reported that employees received an email that stated, "As part of this shift in focus, we no longer need most generalist AI tutor positions and your employment with xAI will conclude.” Staff were told they would be paid until November 30 but were immediately cut off from xAI’s systems after receiving the notice.
The annotation team has been a critical part of Grok’s development, providing the data context that allows the AI to process real-world information. The move indicates a sharp narrowing of xAI’s workforce toward domain expertise rather than broad annotation.
Musk’s company points to hiring spree
In response to Reuters, xAI referred to a statement posted on X, the social network Musk acquired earlier this year. The company said it will "immediately surge our Specialist AI tutor team by 10x” and announced new hiring drives across multiple fields including STEM, finance, medicine and safety.
The post added that specialist tutors will be "enhancing [the company’s] AI technologies through high-quality inputs, labels and annotations using specialized software.” It also explained that these inputs would go beyond text, involving audio recordings and video sessions.
Timing and leadership exits
The layoffs come shortly after several high-profile departures at xAI, including chief financial officer Mike Liberatore. These changes follow the July launch of Grok 4, which Musk described as "the smartest AI in the world.” At the time, Musk claimed Grok could achieve near-perfect results in exams like the SATs and GREs and even suggested the system could "invent new tech maybe later this year.”
