A critical situation is unfolding at Canada’s Marineland, where 30 beluga whales face potential euthanasia following the federal governments refusal of emergency funding for their sustenance.

The park, which closed to visitors last year, has stated it may be forced to take this drastic measure without financial aid for feed.

The Fisheries Ministry recently declined to provide additional money, with Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson asserting the governments non-responsibility for Marinelands expenses. Furthermore, Canadas Fisheries and Oceans department previously denied Marineland a permit to transfer the whales to an aquarium in China.

Ontario’s Premier, Doug Ford, has criticised the federal governments stance, highlighting the irony of denying permits while disclaiming responsibility for the whales fate. Animal rights organisations are advocating for the whales relocation to a sanctuary, such as one in Nova Scotia, though experts caution about the significant costs and logistical challenges involved. Marineland has historically faced criticism regarding the conditions of its captive animals.
