Citizen journalist Zhang Zhan, who reported on the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, has had her prison sentence extended by four years. Zhang Zhan, a Chinese citizen journalist, remains imprisoned in China following a four-year extension to her original sentence. Her initial arrest in 2020 stemmed from her on-the-ground reporting in Wuhan during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Zhang’s accounts of overcrowded hospitals and deserted streets presented a stark contrast to the official government narrative, leading to her conviction for “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.”

This charge, widely criticised by international human rights organisations and Western governments, was based on her reporting, which was deemed to be disruptive to social order. Despite serving her initial four-year sentence, Zhang was released in May 2024 only to be re-arrested three months later. This second arrest and subsequent sentencing have further fuelled international condemnation.

The US State Department, among others, has labelled the prosecution a "sham," expressing deep concern about the lack of transparency surrounding the charges and the apparent suppression of dissenting voices.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a prominent international press freedom organisation, has actively campaigned for Zhang’s release, highlighting the severe deterioration in her health during her imprisonment. She reportedly undertook a hunger strike following her arrest and received force-feeding.
