New Delhi: According to the latest International Living Annual Global Retirement Index, Greece has been named the world’s prime retirement destination. The ranking reflects a notable shift in global retiree preferences, with Greece overtaking long-standing luminaries like Portugal and Spain.

Greece’s top position comes due to a variety of reasons attributed in the list. These include health care quality and affordability, cost of living, access to reasonably priced housing, climate, visa and residency accessibility, and lifestyle factors. All of these were seen in accordance to how easily retirees can integrate into the countries examined.

Housing too is accessible, with the level of affordability becoming increasingly uncommon in many competing destinations. The major reason though remains the appealingly warm Mediterranean climate and mild winters.

Added with the appeal of coastal towns and islands, Greece comes easily at the top. The popular ‘Golden Visa’ pathway that the country offers, which makes settling long-term more feasible for non-citizens, is another added benefit. At number two on the list was Panama which continues to establish dominance in the retirement destination league with its low cost of living, infrastructure quality and long-established retiree-friendly programs. Panama is closely followed by Costa Rica where good climatic conditions, and a strong healthcare system make it a lucrative destination for people around the world to retire. The country’s natural beauty, safety, and reputation for peaceful living further enhance its appeal as a retirement place.

Then follows a mainstay on such lists, Portugal, an excellent European retiree destination with a reasonably priced living standard. Its varied landscapes, mild climate and historical appeal further add to its appeal. At number five is Mexico, which offers a huge variety in the natural landscape and its vibrant community is another positive for the place. Reasonably priced daily expenses such as food and transport make the country a highly practical choice for retirement.
