New Delhi: A customer who bought a defective solitaire diamond ring from Tanishq has received a boost after the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (DCDRC) directed the jewellery brand of the Tata Group to refund the amount and also pay compensation.
The DCDRC came to the conclusion that there was a defect in the ring's design due to which its central diamond fell out. The order was passed on November 20 and now Tanishq is to return the customer the ring's amount, Rs 12.8 lakh, and also pay Rs 1 lakh in compensation for harassment and mental agony, apart from covering the litigation cost of Rs 5,000.
The residents of Sector 39, Deepika and Amit Khera, filed a complaint against Tanishq and its showroom at GIP Mall in Sector 38A, seeking compensation of Rs 1 crore after a 1.81-carat solitaire diamond dislodged from the woman's ring, which caused them harassment.
Deepika purchased the ring on October 10, 2018, for Rs 12.8 lakh. However, the diamond fell out on September 30, 2019, and the incident reportedly shocked her, causing her to even lose consciousness. When they took the ring back to the showroom, its craftsman reportedly admitted its faulty design, a fact reiterated by the company's head quality analyst.
However, Tanishq denied the allegations of a design defect and instead blamed the customers for the displacement of the diamond. It offered to repair, replace or return at no extra cost, and the complainants declined the offers. They filed a complaint with the district commission, which found the ring's design to be defective.
