Maithili Thakur, a popular folk singer, who born in Benipatti, Madhubani district of Bihar, has jumped into the fray for 2025 Bihar elections under the banner of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She is contesting from Alinagar assembly  constituency.
Born to a family of Maithil musicians, Thakur started learning music from her grandfather at a very young age of four. Her grandfather was her first music master while she was also taught by her father in Maithili folk, Hindustani classical music as well as the instruments, harmonium and the tabla. Maithili’s father, Ramesh Thakur, was a music teacher in Delhi and her mother, Bharti Thakur was a housewife. She also has two brothers, Rishav and Ayachi, who were also taught music alongside her by their father and grandfather. The siblings collaborate on multiple music projects. Thakur was homeschooled till 5th grade, she did her further studies from Atmaram Sanatan Dharma College, Delhi University.
Thakur’s career as a musician began in 2011 as a contestant in Little Champs, a television singing competition, which aired on Colors TV. Four years later, she participated in Indian Idol Junior which aired on Sony TV. In 2016, she won the I Genius Young Singing Star competition. In 2017, she was a contestant in Rising Star season 1 which aired on Colors TV, she ended up coming runner up in the competition, losing by just 2 votes. This show helped her rise in internet popularity. Following this, her presence skyrocketed from very successful Facebook and youtube videos. In 2019, Thakur and her brothers were made the brand ambassador for the Madhubani district of Bihar by the Election Commission and in 2021 she was awarded the Lokmat Sur Jyotsna National Music Award. Thakur has also won the National Creators Award and the NHRCCB India Pride Award. She has a very successful Youtube channel with over 5 million subscribers.
Maithili Thakur joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on October 14, 2025 and she will contest in the upcoming elections from the Alinagar assembly constituency on BJP ticket. Voting for this constituency will take place in the first phase of elections on 6th November 2025.
