As the second phase of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025 draws near, one of the most notable faces in the political arena is Tej Pratap Yadav. Coming from one of Bihar’s most prominent political families, Yadav’s candidacy is expected to draw significant attention, and many believe he could have a strong showing in the polls.

Tej Pratap Yadav, the elder brother of Chief Ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav, is contesting the 2025 elections not under the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) banner, but as a candidate of his newly formed party, the Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD). He is contesting from the Mahua constituency, a seat he has previously represented.

Early life

Born on April 16, 1988, in Gopalganj district, Bihar, Tej Pratap Yadav is the son of two former Chief Ministers — Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, the latter being the first and only woman Chief Minister of Bihar to date. He has seven sisters and a younger brother, Tejashwi Yadav.

Tej Pratap completed his 12th-grade education from the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). He married Aishwarya Rai, daughter of former Bihar MLA Chandrika Rai and granddaughter of former Chief Minister Daroga Prasad Rai.

However, his marriage has been marred by controversy, with Aishwarya accusing him of domestic violence, substance abuse, and cross-dressing. On May 24, 2025, Tej Pratap made headlines after posting a Facebook photo with a woman named Anushka Yadav, claiming they had been in a relationship for 12 years. The post sparked public outrage and led his father, Lalu Prasad Yadav, to expel him from the RJD for six years the very next day for “violating family and party morals.”

Earlier that year, Tej Pratap was also caught in another controversy during a Holi celebration at his Patna residence, where a video surfaced of him ordering his bodyguard, constable Deepak Kumar, to dance to a song or face suspension, an incident that drew widespread criticism.

Beyond politics, Yadav runs a YouTube channel where he shares vlogs and personal videos, which has amassed over 200,000 subscribers.

A career full of twists

Tej Pratap Yadav has been a two-term MLA in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, serving from 2015 to the present. He previously held the position of Cabinet Minister for Health from November 2015 to July 2017.

Having represented the RJD in the last two elections, Yadav broke away from the party in September 2025 to form his own political outfit, the Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD), on September 26, 2025. He is now contesting the Mahua Assembly seat under his new party’s banner.

Polling for the Mahua constituency took place in the first phase of the Bihar Assembly Elections on November 6, 2025. The results will determine whether Tej Pratap Yadav’s new political experiment can carve out an independent identity or whether his fortunes remain tied to the legacy of the Yadav family.
