Located in the Saran district of the state, Chhapra is one of the 243 state assembly constituencies in Bihar. The current MLA from this constituency is Dr. C. N. Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who secured 75,710 votes in the 2020 elections, beating Sipahi Lal Mahto of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)  by a margin of 6,771 votes.

The 2015 election data showed the total number of registered electors at 305,079. During the 2015 elections 166,739 electors in this constituency were male, 138,336 were female and 4 belonged to the third gender. Voter turnout in the election cycle was 51.87 per cent as 158,250 electors out of the total registered electors cast their votes. 

In the last legislative assembly elections in 2020, the Election Commission documented the total number of registered electors at 330,176; where 174,783 electors were male, 155,389 electors were female and 4 were of the third gender in this constituency. Voter turnout in this election cycle was 51.09 per cent as 168,688 electors out of the total registered electors cast their votes.

The 2024 Election Commission data shows that the total number of registered electors in Chhapra constituency are 336,354 electors. Male registered electors in this constituency amount to 175,986 while the female registered electors amount to 160,364 and 4 electors of the third gender are registered. Polling for this constituency took place in the first phase of elections on November 6, 2025.

Chhapra is a city which has notable historical and cultural legacy. It has several sites of religious and archeological significance. Agriculturally, the soil in Chhapra is alluvial and very fertile which makes it suitable for cultivation of a variety of crops. Sugarcane and maize are the main crops cultivated here.

Chhapra constituency covers an approximate area of 200.99 square kilometers and its geographic coordinates are 25° 46 '21.7"N 84° 41' 34.8"E. This constituency also shares its borders with four other legislative assembly constituencies of Bihar which are Manjhi, Marhaura, Garkha and Barhara. Chhapra also shares an interstate border with Uttar Pradesh.
