New Delhi: Microsoft co-founder and Gates Foundation Chair Bill Gates has lauded India as a preeminent global force in innovation, highlighting the country's pioneering solutions as having the potential to profoundly impact millions across the Global South.
Speaking at an event organised by the Indian Consulate General in Seattle, in collaboration with the Gates Foundation, Gates expressed optimism for continued partnership with India as it progresses towards its goal of "Viksit Bharat 2047" (Developed India 2047).
"It's fitting that we're coming together on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi," Gates remarked, drawing a parallel between Gandhi's ideals of equality and dignity and the foundational principles of the Gates Foundation's work. "Today, India stands as a global leader in innovation and is pioneering solutions with the potential to save and improve millions of lives across the Global South. We look forward to continuing to partner with India on its journey toward Viksit Bharat 2047."
The event, held at the Bill Gates Foundation premises, coincided with the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the International Day of Non-Violence. It served as a vibrant showcase of Indian culture, arts, and cuisine, drawing senior leadership from the Washington and Seattle city governments.
The celebration also featured a special address by Jonathan Granoff, President of the US Global Security Institute, who spoke on the "Relevance of Gandhian Values in Contemporary World Order." These events in the Greater Seattle area were part of wider Gandhi Jayanti celebrations, honouring the Mahatma's enduring legacy.
Earlier on Thursday, a commemorative event was held at the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the Bellevue Public Library, with Bellevue City Council leadership in attendance. Additionally, a function at the Seattle Centre, near the iconic Space Needle, saw Washington State Senator Vandana Slatter offering floral tributes at a bust of Mahatma Gandhi, in the presence of Eddie Rye, Chairman and Founder of the Martin Luther King (MLK) – Gandhi Foundation.
According to the Indian Consulate General in Seattle, these events saw participation from a broad spectrum of Indian-American leadership. Young school children also contributed a special rendition of Gandhi’s favourite hymns, adding a poignant touch to the commemorations. The Consulate highlighted the widespread engagement, stating, "A large cross-section of Indian-American leadership attended these events in Seattle and Bellevue, respectively, which also featured a special rendition of Gandhi’s favourite hymns by young school children."
