Mamata Banerjee Challenges BJP and Election Commission Over SIR Drive

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticised the BJP and the Election Commission over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive, labelling it a political manoeuvre. Speaking at a charged rally in North 24 Parganas, Ms Banerjee issued a stern warning, stating, "I will shake up India if you hit me," and predicted that 2029 would be a "dangerous year" for the BJP.

Ms Banerjee alleged that the SIR drive is being selectively used to target minority communities, women, and the poor, suggesting an attempt to categorise Bengali citizens as Bangladeshis.

She further accused the Election Commission of acting as a "BJP Commission." Following West Bengals state assembly elections in 2026, Ms Banerjee plans a nationwide padayatra to highlight concerns regarding the SIR drives implementation.
