New Delhi: Several Indian nationals arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport from Iran as the Islamic Republic continues to grapple with rising tensions. The nationals returned to India late Friday evening, days after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued an advisory urging Indian citizens to leave the country due to the worsening security situation.

Since then, the MEA has been closely monitoring developments and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian citizens abroad.

Returnees thank Indian government

One returnee described the situation as disturbing and thanked the government for its support. “The conditions are bad there. The Government of India has been very cooperative, and the Embassy provided us with timely information to leave Iran as early as possible. Modi ji hai toh har cheez mumkin hai,” he said.

Another Indian national told ANI, “We were there for a month, but we faced problems only in the last one or two weeks. Whenever we went outside, protesters would come in front of our car and cause some trouble. The internet was shut down, which is why we couldn’t inform our families, and we were very worried. We couldn’t even contact the embassy.”

A third returnee said, “I am a resident of Jammu and Kashmir. The protests there were dangerous. The Indian government has made a very good effort and brought the students back safely.”

Meanwhile, several relatives of those returning from Iran reached Indira Gandhi International Airport to receive their loved ones.

Several advisories on worsening situations

Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Tehran issued an advisory asking Indian nationals—including students, businesspersons, pilgrims, and tourists—to leave Iran through available means of transport, including commercial flights, citing the “evolving situation.” Additionally, the MEA in New Delhi strongly advised Indians to avoid travel to Iran until further notice. It reiterated its January 5 advisory, urging Indian nationals in Iran to remain cautious and avoid participating in protests or demonstrations.

The protests erupted at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar on December 28 over the Iranian rial’s record fall in value and later spread into nationwide demonstrations. The currency’s decline followed multiple crises, including unprecedented water shortages, power outages, rising unemployment, and surging inflation.
