Cyclone Senyar expected to drench Tamil Nadu with heavy rain as Chennai put on yellow alert
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Chennai as the northeast monsoon intensifies, bringing continuous heavy rain across Tamil Nadu. A low-pressure area could form Cyclone Senyar, named by the UAE, over the Bay of Bengal, potentially nearing Tamil Nadu's coast by November 29-30.
New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a yellow alert for Chennai with Tamil Nadu getting battered by a continuous spate of heavy rainfall for the past 24 hours as the northeast monsoon has gathered increased strength.
As per the IMD, there is a low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca, which can transform within the next 24 hours into a depression over the south Andaman Sea. It can become a cyclonic storm over the south Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.
What will be the name of the cyclone?
If the cyclone forms, it will be named Cyclone Senyar. The UAE has given the name, and its meaning is 'lion'. The IMD predicts that between November 29 and 30, the cyclonic storm may move close to the coast of Tamil Nadu's capital.
Tamil Nadu braces for more heavy rain
According to Chennai's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), heavy to very heavy rainfall may lash Tamil Nadu in the coming days. There is an orange alert for Tirunelveli and Tenkasi with extremely heavy rain expected to drench them, especially the hilly regions.
On November 25, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram districts may experience heavy rain, and seven districts are expected to receive rainfall on the next day. On November 27, heavy rain may lash Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Nagapattinam.
There is an orange alert for Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Nagapattinam on November 28, and seven northern coastal districts in the state may experience very heavy rain on November 29. People staying in low-lying areas have been advised to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel. Chennai may witness light rain from November 25 to 27, with isolated thundershowers expected on November 28, and heavy rains on November 29 and 30.
