From allergies to psoriasis: Skin problems that worsen during pollution season
Pollution and sudden temperature changes can cause hives that are brought on by hives—red, itching, swollen welts on the skin's surface. They are caused by inhaled allergens or even stress induced by seasonal change.
Pollution also damages the barrier of the skin, thus making it more sensitive.
New Delhi: Weather conditions and excessive pollution are capable of killing your skin. Through the fluctuations in weather and rising levels of pollutants in the environment, your skin will be more prone to contact allergies, irritations, and sensitivity. Being aware of the most frequent skin allergies will allow you to take the necessary precautions and protect your skin.
Dr Neeharika Goyal, Consultant-Dermatologist, Svastam Wellness Skin Clinic, New Delhi, listed common skin allergies that occur during this time of the year when pollution is at its worst.
- Contact Dermatitis: This is the most frequent cutaneous reaction to the presentation of allergens or irritants such as dust, tobacco smoke, pollen, or rubbing clothing. Its features include redness, itchiness, stinging, and blistering in some instances. Exacerbations become more likely when the weather is changing, with allergens such as pollen and mold spores becoming active.
- Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis): It also occurs in cold and dry climates or in severely polluted air. The skin is extremely dry, itchy, and reddened. Pollution weakens the skin barrier, leading to weakening of the skin, particularly in pre-existing conditions.
- Urticaria (Hives): Pollution and sudden temperature changes can cause hives that are brought on by hives—red, itching, swollen welts on the skin's surface. They are caused by inhaled allergens or even stress induced by seasonal change. Hives are quick to develop and range from a few hours to a few days in duration.
- Psoriasis Breakouts: Although not an allergy, psoriasis can be activated through pollution and environmental transition. The skin will be red, scaly, and itchy. Dry air during winter and air irritants can trigger or activate.
- Allergic Sensitivity to Skincare Products: In the changing season, the skin is more susceptible and there is an increased chance of reacting to fragrance, preservative, or color in cosmetics or skin care. Pollution also damages the barrier of the skin, thus making it more sensitive.
Prevention Tips:
- Gentle cleaning of your skin to remove allergens and pollutants.
- Hypoallergenic, fragrance-free products.
- Condition your skin to seal and tighten its barrier.
- Use protective gear and apply sunscreen year-round.
- Maintain air purifiers at home which would reduce exposure to airborne allergens.
Using precautions in regards to these common allergies and taking precautions, you can maintain healthier skin even in extreme environmental conditions.
