Coco Gauff part ways with coach Matthew Daly ahead of US Open 2025
Coco Gauff has reportedly fired her coach, Matthew Daly, just days before the start of the US Open 2025.
New Delhi: The World No.3 Coco Gauff has fired her coach Matthew Daly just days before the start of the US Open 2025, reports ESPN. The two-time major champion will continue to work with her longtime coach J.C. Faurel, but has brought in biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan to her team.
MacMillan and Faurel were spotted with her during a practice session on Wednesday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in New York. Daly has confirmed the news to Bounces and said that the decision had happened "recently", but he wanted to let Gauff be the one to speak about her decision.
Gauff hired Daly in 2024 after parting ways with Brad Gilbert following a disappointing campaign at the US Open. He worked along with Faurel and spent several weeks working with Gauff ahead of the China Open. They focused on changing her grip on serve, among other technical and tactical details.
Gauff won the China Open and ended the season as the WTA Finals champion. She also won the French Open title and reached in the finals of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open with Daly and Faurel as her coaches. Due to her inconsistent serving, Gauff has only managed to win four single's matches in four events since her victory in Paris.
She lost to Dayana Yastremska in the first round of Wimbledon 2025. MacMillan has previously worked with world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, and she has given him credit for helping her with her serve, after struggling with the yips in 2022, and with improving her forehand. Gauff has faced issues with her serve this summer and had 42 double faults during her three matches at the Canadian Open earlier this month.
When will US Open main draw get underway?
The US Open main draw will start on Sunday in New York. Gauff, who won the US Open title in 2023, is expected to first play in an exhibition event at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday.
