PM Modi, Sports Minister Mandaviya hail Ahmedabad getting 2030 CWG hosting rights

The announcement at Commonwealth Sport's general assembly clears the decks for the marquee event's return to India after two decades since New Delhi hosted the 2010 edition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya hailed the historic occasion of Ahmedabad getting the 2030 Commonwealth Games hosting rights. Ahmedabad, on Wednesday, was formally awarded hosting rights of the centenary edition of CWG during Commonwealth Sport's general assembly in Glasgow.

The announcement clears the decks for the marquee event's return to India after two decades since New Delhi hosted the 2010 edition.

Mandavia shared a social media post, hailing the decision and saying that Commonwealth Sport's decision to award the hosting rights of the 2030 CWG to Ahmedabad is a landmark moment for the country as it aims to become a sporting powerhouse by 2047.

"It is a prestigious moment that India will host centenary Commonwealth Games," Mandaviya said here.

"India is capable of hosting major events and will be among top-five sporting nations by 2047," he added.

Meanwhile, PM Modi also shared his excitement with a heartwarming social media post.

Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated the Indian citizens after Ahmedabad was given the hosting rights of the 2030 CWG.

Landmark decision to boost India's Olympics bid

The general assembly of 74 members sanctioned India's bid on Wednesday after Ahmedabad was officially recommended as the proposed host by the Commonwealth Sports' Executive Board last month.

"India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance...We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health," said Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport.

The decision also boosted India's ambition to host the Olympic Games in 2036.

Ahmedabad is also in the race to host the Olympics. To be in all readiness, the city has upgraded its sports infrastructure on a war footing in the last decade.

India faced competition from the Nigerian city of Abuja for the 2030 bid. However, Commonwealth Sport have decided to consider the African nation for the 2034 edition.

For the 2010 Delhi CWG, India had spent close to Rs 70,000 crore, exceeding the initial estimate of Rs 1600 crore by a whopping margin.
