New Delhi: In recent times, there has been a string of attacks on Hindu people in Bangladesh, and such an incident has happened once again. Notably, as per the 2022 census, the country has 3.13 million Hindus, which makes up about 7.95 per cent of the population.
Yet another minority murder in Bangladesh
In the latest case, an SUV reportedly belonging to a former Bangladesh Nationalist Party worker crushed a 30-year-old Hindu man named Ripon Saha, a worker at the fuel station. The vehicle was leaving the petrol pump without paying for the fuel, and Ripon tried to stop it, but the car allegedly ran over him before fleeing.
Police arrest vehicle owner, driver
The Daily Star has reported that the incident took place at Karim Filling Station in Goalanda Mor, a significant crossroads and location in the Rajbari district of Bangladesh. Rajbari Sadar Police chief Khondakar Ziaur Rahman has reportedly said, "We will file a murder case. The worker stood in front of the car after they refused to pay for fuel, and they ran him over before fleeing."
The car involved was a black SUV that took fuel worth Rs 3,710 on Friday evening and appeared to leave without paying. Saha stood in front of the car, hoping to stop it, but the driver ran over him and fled, as the helpless worker died on the spot. Police have arrested the vehicle's owner, Abul Hashem, alias Sujan, and his driver.
Attacks on minority increase in Bangladesh
According to the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, a human rights organisation against religious discrimination, attacks on minority communities are increasing in Bangladesh and have recorded 51 such incidents in December 2025 alone.
Recently, another Hindu man, 28-year-old Samir Kumar Das, a battery-operated auto-rickshaw driver, was beaten to death in the Daganbhuiyan area of Feni district. Police said the attackers assaulted and stabbed Das before fleeing with his auto-rickshaw. With the general elections just around the corner in Bangladesh, experts fear that such attacks will only increase across the country.
