New Delhi: The United States doesn’t want a strong India, renowned American economist Jeffrey Sachs stated. In an interview to an Indian media organisation, Sachs said that he doesn’t want to be pessimistic, and negative as he is not a part of the talks. He, however, mentioned that he will be surprised if India pulled off an agreement with the United States this fall.

The economist made the comments while speaking at an event organised by Money Control in April 2025. The comments were made a few months back, but the latest developments in the US-India trade talks compels one to think that Sachs’ words are coming true.

US wants to use India against China

The US on the one side wants to use India against China. The US government has no interest in India’s goodwill per se…believe me this is a game from the US side and the game is what can we do to displace China, he said.

“Now, India is going to be a very very successful economy and when that happens, the US will not like India any more than the United States likes China right now…this is fated,” he added.

When asked to express his views on whether India is getting all the love as the country is an underdog at present, the economist said, “It is not so much love fortunately, believe me US President Donald Trump will not open the doors for Indian manufacturing even if India opens the door for agriculture because Trump’s whole idea is low cost industry should not affect American industry.”

Learn from the British: Sachs to India

Trump will not agree to what India wants, which is to make India as the replacement for China, he added.

Being critical of Trump, Sachs said the US president doesn’t understand that the world economy doesn’t work that way and there is a division of labour.

Cautioning India against playing into the hands of the US, the economist advised India to not close the options with China, Russia, and Europe. “Don’t let the US tell you that you are with us so you are against them…that is the American trick by the way. Learn from the British, don’t play that game whatever,” he stated.
