New Delhi: Sanju Samson took a brilliant catch to dismiss Devon Conway in the first T20I between India and New Zealand at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Wednesday, January 21.
Chasing the 239-target, the Blackcaps got off to a poor start as fast bowler Arshdeep Singh removed Conway for a duck on the second ball of the first over. He bowled a full delivery, and the New Zealand opener was looking to play a cover drive, but got a thick edge.
The ball was dying on the keeper, and Sanju moved low to the left and grabbed a one-handed stunner. This was the fourth time in 13 balls that Arshdeep removed Conway in T20Is. After his dismissal, the visitors lost two more wickets as Hardik Pandya removed Rachin Ravindra, and Varun Chakarvarthy dismissed Tim Robinson for 21 runs. The Blackcaps were 54/3 in 7 overs.
The Men in Blue posted a 238-run total after being asked to bat first in the series opener. Sanju looked good in his short stay and scored 10 runs off seven balls before he was removed by Jamieson in the second over. Ishan Kishan played a stunning lofted drive on his international return but was dismissed by Jacob Duffy for eight runs.
Suryakumar, who was struggling to score runs, played a brilliant back-foot drive on the first ball. He stitched a 99-run partnership with Abhishek Sharma, who held the other end. The Indian captain scored 32 runs off 22 balls and was removed by Mitchell Santner.
Shivam Dube also failed to make a significant contribution with the bat, but Abhishek batted brilliantly and scored 84 runs off 35 balls, with the help of five boundaries and eight maximums. Rinku Singh also played well and smashed an unbeaten 44 runs off 20 balls with the help of four boundaries and three maximums to help the Men in Blue post a massive total.
