‘They can take their dead economies down together’: Trump slams India-Russia ties after imposing tariffs

US President Trump levied a 25% tariff on Indian imports, citing India's increased trade with Russia. He criticised both India and Russia, referring to their economies as "dead", expressing indifference to their bilateral relations. The tariffs, effective August 1, are in response to India's substantial increase in Russian crude oil imports and continued arms purchases from Russia despite Western sanctions.

New Delhi: In a fresh outburst on Thursday, US President Donald Trump hit out at India’s trade ties with Russia, and said he doesn’t care what India does with Russia as he pointed out that both countries had “dead economies”.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, the US President wrote: “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World.”

Targeting Russia, Trump said, “Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let’s keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!”

Trump wrote the post a day after he slapped a 25% tariff on Indian imports and penalties for India’s trade and defence ties with Russia. India’s imports of Russian crude oil have gone up substantially from just 0.2% before the Russia-Ukraine war to almost 35–40% of its total oil purchases. New Delhi has also been buying advanced weapons systems from Russia, despite sanctions imposed by the West.

In a previous statement, Trump had dubbed India’s trade regime as having “the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers of any country”. He said that India’s high tariffs have kept American companies away from entering the Indian market. “India will therefore be paying a tariff of 25 per cent, plus a penalty for the above, starting on August first,” Trump wrote.
