'Objectionable' posts on PM, RSS: SC allows cartoonist to publish apology on social media platforms

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday (August 19) allowed Indore-based cartoonist Hemant Malviya to publish an apology across all social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, over alleged objectionable social media posts on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. A bench comprising Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria, hearing Malviya’s plea seeking anticipatory bail in the case registered by the Madhya Pradesh police, also extended protection from arrest to the cartoonist till the next date of hearing. Advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for Malviya, made a statement before the bench that the cartoonist would publish an apology on social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, for the said alleged offensive posts on social media. Delhi court rejects Christian Michel James’s plea seeking release in AgustaWestland case

New Delhi: A city court has rejected the plea of alleged middleman Christian Michel James seeking his release in the in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper case on the ground that he had undergone the period of maximum sentence of seven years for the purported offences. Special Judge Sanjay Jindal said that James’s plea that he is entitled to the benefit under section 436A of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which deals with the maximum period for which an under-trial prisoner can be detained, cannot be accepted. "The request of the accused Christian Michel James for his release under section 436 A CrPC stands declined," the court said. SC quashes Madras HC order asking MK Stalin-led DMK govt not to use names, photos of CM in welfare schemes

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday (August 6) set aside an interim order of the Madras High Court prohibiting the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government from using the names and photographs of serving and former chief ministers in welfare schemes. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria, while setting aside the interim order, also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on AIADMK leader C.Ve Shanmugam, who had moved the High Court, saying the plea was not only "misconceived in law" but also an "abuse of the process of law." The apex court order came on pleas moved by the DMK as well as the state government of Tamil Nadu challenging the High Court order. Delhi court accepts CBI’s closure report, closes corruption case against AAP leader Satyendar Jain

New Delhi: A special court has accepted a closure report filed by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a 2018 case against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain and others registered on a complaint alleging irregular engagement of professionals in the Public Works Department (PWD), violation of rules, and payments made from unrelated project funds. Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh accepted the CBI’s closure report, saying when the investigating agency has not found any incriminating evidence over such a long period to prove the commission of any offence, further proceedings would serve no useful purpose. “When CBI could not find any evidence of criminal conspiracy, abuse of power, pecuniary gain, or wrongful loss to the Government Exchequer, and the alleged acts are at most administrative irregularities, no offence under section 13(1)(d) of the PC (Prevention of Corruption) Act or criminal conspiracy is established,” the court said. “Despite...

‘Why so touchy’: SC to BJP leader while extending stay on defamation proceedings against Shahsi Tharoor over 'scorpion' remark against PM

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday (August 1) asked Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajiv Babbar, who has filed a defamation case against Congress leader Shashi Tharoor over his alleged “scorpion on Shivling” remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “why so touchy about all this” and urged him to close the defamation case against Tharoor. “Why do you want to be so touchy about all this? Terror funding case: Delhi HC seeks NIA’s response on Baramulla MP Rashid’s plea challenging framing of charges

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday (July 31) issued notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and sought its response on a plea filed by Bramulla Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Sheikh Abdul Rashid challenging framing of charges against him in a terror funding case. A bench comprising Justice Vivek Chaudhary and Justice Shalinder Kaur granted time to the NIA to file its reply and listed Rashid’s plea for further hearing on October 6. New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 30) dismissed several appeals against the Allahabad High Court order acquitting domestic help Surendra Koli in the 2006 Nithari serial killings case in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
