New Delhi: Former Indian Premier League champions Rajasthan Royals have received a $1.3 billion buyout offer in initial round of bidding for valuations. Owned by principal take holders Emerging Media Ventures along with minority investment from RedBird Capital Partners and Tiger Global, the team has put themselves on the market and invited four groups to continue bidding in the second round. Among the interested parties in fray are a consortium led by Times Internet Chairman Satyan Gajwani and another backed by US entrepreneur Kal Somani, reports Bloomberg. The consortium of Somani, who is an existing investor, has offered $1.3 billion in preliminary discussions though it depends on future performance of IPL media rights. The sale process was launched with a floor valuation of around $1.1 billion by adviser Raine Group, anonymous sources told Bloomberg, whose efforts to bring forth any comment from the consortiums didn 't materialise. It was earlier reported that Blackstone Inc....

With T20 World Cup in mind, New Zealand take India series in stride

New Delhi: New Zealand 's eye should be firmly on the upcoming T20 World Cup and must take their series defeat India in stride. New Zealand have lost all three matches of the five-match series and have been thrashed in all the encounters but Oram said focus is on peaking at the showpiece tournament. "Well, the easy answer is that we win these two games (4th and 5th T20Is) and that would be nice for the overall team confidence. I said before about guys coming back from niggles and injury layoffs, guys finding their own individual confidence, but to win games is nice," Oram said, ahead of the fourth T20I in Vizag on Wednesday. "To sing our winning team song after a nice victory against a good side would be cool, but at the same time you 've got to look a bit deeper than wins and losses. "And that 's not downplaying the results here, but we 've got to make sure that we 're looking at the longer term and the bigger picture as well. And historically New Zealand...

Zverev shakes off Tien to enter Australian Open semis

New Delhi: Third seed Alexander Zverev Learner Tien 6-3 6-7(5) 6-1 7-6(3) to advance to the semi-finals of Australian Open in Melbourne on Tuesday. The German was runner-up to Jannik Sinner last year and is set to face either Carlos Alcaraz or Alex de Minaur in what woud be his fourth last four appearance at Melbourne Park. "Learner, from the baseline, was playing unbelievable," Zverev said after service 24 aces and one double fault during his win. "I don 't think I 've played anyone who plays that well from the baseline for a very, very long time. I don 't know what (Tien 's coach) Michael Chang has done with him in the off-season, but the way he 's playing it 's incredible. "Without my 20 aces, or something like that, I probably wouldn 't have won today, so obviously very happy with my serve. And just generally happy to be back in the semis." Ban on wearable fitness trackers raises eyebrows Aryna Sabalenka hopes Australian Open would allow players...

New Zealand impressed with Abhishek Sharma's six-hitting ability

New Delhi: Abhishek Sharma 's ability to hit sixes is a product of hours of planning and practice that has left New Zealand in shock and awe. The opener blasted a 20-ball 68 not out, including a 14-ball fifty with five sixes, to help India chase down a 154-run target and win the five-match T20I series with two matches to spare. New Zealand have found it difficult counter the top-ranked Sharma 's bold hitting approach as he smashed a 35-ball 84 in the series opener. "To be honest, their batting has been dynamic and explosive," batter Mark Chapman said after the third T20I on Sunday. "I haven 't seen much of him play in person. But his six-hitting ability is second to none. Just the way he goes about it, he seems like he 's really putting some thought into his batting. "Obviously he 's playing some really good cricket at the moment. That 's just the nature of T20 cricket. When someone 's playing really well, they can be hard to stop at times. "There...

Australian Open: Musetti faces Djokovic, Anisimova to meet Pegula in quarters

New Delhi: Lorenzo Musetti entered the Australian Open quarter-finals for the first time with a 6-2 7-5 6-4 win over Taylor Fritz in Melbourne on Monday to set up a meeting with 10-time champion Novak Djokovic. The Italian combined to-level court coverage with blistering shotmaking to win on Rod Laver Arena to complete a set of quarter-final appearances at the four Grand Slams. Fourth seed Amanda Anisimova degeated Wang Xinyu 7-6(4) 6-4 to reach her maiden quarter-final at Melbourne Park, where she will face fellow American Jessica Pegula. "Honestly, I feel very proud. I know Taylor very well, we 've played many matches, many battles. And last time in Turin he was the winner," Musetti said on their meeting at the ATP Finals last year. "I came here with a different mentality and I think I made one of my best performances ... I 'm very happy. I improved a lot on serve and especially being a little bit more aggressive with the forehand and trying to use my variations. "My coach...

Players body urge for unity after Bangladesh's absence from T20 World Cup

New Delhi: Bangladesh ’s absence from T20 World Cup is a sad reality that demands all stakeholders to work towards uniting the sport rather than dividing it, the international cricketers ' association said on Sunday. The International Cricket Council replaced Bangladesh with Scotland for refusal to play in India citing security reasons in the wake of soured political relations between the Asian neighbours. ICC declined Bangladesh 's request to move their matches to tournament co-host Sri Lanka, pointing to logistical and financial challenges to change the schedule so close to the tournament, which begins on February 7. "The withdrawal of Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup, and resulting absence of a valued cricketing nation from cricket 's pinnacle international T20 event, is a sad moment for our sport, the Bangladesh players and fans, and one that requires deep reflection," World Cricketers ' Association (WCA) Chief Executive Tom Moffat said in a statement....

'Grateful' Scotland ready for T20 World Cup, says CEO

New Delhi: Scotland are ready to play in the T20 World Cup and have initiated efforts to land in host country India immediately. Scotland received a late invitation from the International Cricket Council to replace Bangladesh following their refusal to play in India. Bangladesh cited security concerns over reluctance to travel to India for three group stage games in Kolkata and Mumbai and requested shift of them to tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka. But ICC declined citing its assessment report of no significant security threat and escalating costs involved and informed Bangladesh Cricket Board of removal on Saturday. Scotland took their place as per the latest rankings and Cricket Scotland’s chief executive Trudy Lindblade expressed gratitude towards the ICC for inclusion in the 20-team tournament. “Earlier today I received correspondence from the ICC asking if our men’s team would play at the Men’s T20 World Cup, and we have accepted,” Lindblade said on Cricket Scotland’s...

Ultra-aggression not high risk, insists Abhishek Sharma

New Delhi: Instinctive Abhishek Sharma insists he isn’t living by the sword by embracing an ultra-aggressive batting style. The opener cracked a 35-ball 84, with eight sixes and five boundaries, to set up India’s 48-run victory in their five-match T20I series opener against New Zealand in Nagpur on Wednesday. After his blistering knock, Sharma said he is more of an instinctive player who relies on timing rather than range-hitting. "We had a plan from day one and are just following it. I 've figured out if you want to hit all balls or strike at 200, you have to carry intent. All teams have a plan for me. It 's about my preparation. I 'm going to back my instinct," he said. The left hander was named player of the match at the post-match presentation ceremony and said thorough preparation makes big-hitting possible. 'Timing batter ' "I don 't feel my role is high-risk, wouldn 't say this is my comfort zone. But I 've been practising to go big...
