New Delhi: Stock market trading in the month of July might be witnessing some confusion regarding the trading day on July 7th as the major national holiday of Muharram is approaching. As per the government calendar, Muharram is a gazetted national holiday that is scheduled for July 6th, 2025. However, the exact date when Muharram is observed will be subject to the moon sighting.
Muharram, also called Ashura, will fall on Sunday, July 6th, as per the government calendar. It is the Islamic New Year. It is observed on the 1st day of the month of Muharram in the Hijri calendar.
As per the data obtained from BSE and NSE, markets will remain closed on account of Muharram. However, observance of Muharram is subject to moonsighting. As per the govt calendar obtained from the National Portal of India (https://www.india.gov.in/), Muharram falls on July 6th, 2025; therefore, in this case market activity is closed on July 6th. Coincidentally, as of now, the occurrence of Muharram also falls on a weekend, i.e., Sunday, and the market usually remains closed due to its scheduled holiday on weekends, i.e., Saturday and Sunday. Trading takes place only on weekdays. If the markets are to be opened on weekends for some special event like the Union Budget, then they can be opened after taking prior approval from SEBI.
In the month of July 2025, there are a total of 8 days in the whole month when the market will remain closed, and all these days will be regular weekend holidays. The days when the markets will remain closed are July 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 19th, 20th, 26th, and 27th. Apart from this, the market will not be closed due to any festival or holiday. Trading will continue as usual on the remaining days, even if there are some regional holidays in some states.
