Bengaluru: Woman dies by suicide, parents allege dowry harassment; husband kills himself days later

A Bengaluru man died by suicide at a hotel in Maharashtra's Nagpur, just days after his wife killed herself. The woman's family had filed a complaint against the man and his family, alleging dowry harassments. They claimed that their daughter killed herself because her in-laws were humiliating her. The man's body was found hanging from a ceiling fan and his mother was lso found critically injured. The man's mother is admitted to hospital and continues to fight for her life.

New Delhi: In a shocking case a man from Bengaluru, travelled to Nagpur and killed himself at a hotel room there. His mother, who had also accompanied him on the journey, also attempted suicide and is admitted to a hospital in the city. She remains in a critical condition.

According to reports, the deceased identified as 36-year-old Suraj Shivanna hanged himself from a ceiling fan, just 2 days after his wife Ganavi died in Bengaluru. The woman had also died by suicide and her parents had filed a complaint against Suraj for dowry harrashment and driving her to kill herself.

The couple got married on October 29 and travelled to Sri Lanka for their honeymoon. But , according to a report in NDTV, there was some dispute between them and they returned to Bengaluru last week. The trip was cut short following the fight between the couple.

According to the complaint filed by Ganavi's parents, after the couple's return from Sri Lanka, they brought their daughter back home. She reportedly faced "rejection and humiliation" from her in-laws.

On Tuesday, Ganavi attempted suicide. She was immediately rushed to hospital, where doctors declared her brain dead. She was kept on a ventilator but passed away on Thursday.

Following the death of the newly married woman, her parents and other family members filed a complaint against Shivanna and his family, alleging dowry harassment. They also sat on a protest outside their home in Bengaluru.

Following immense backlash from their neighbours and others in Bengaluru, Shivanna and his mother travelled to Nagpur. The man was later found dead in a hotel room in the city there, said the Police.

Shivanna's brother Sanjay Shivanna, informed the Nagpur Police about th suicide in the hotel room. The hotel was located on Wardha Road. The police reached the spot and found Suraj hanging from a ceiling fan. He was dead when the police team reached there, said officials. His mother, who had also tried to kill herself, continues to be admitted in hospital and is fighting for her life. Her condition is critical, informed doctors.
