New Delhi: A 45-year-old software engineer in Bengaluru died by suicide on Wednesday at his under-construction house under the Whitefield Police limits. The death note indicates multiple factors, including repeated pressure, a notice, and a demand for a large sum of money.
The Bengaluru police recovered the body of Murali Govindaraju, found hanging from an iron hook on the second floor of the building early in the morning. According to the complaint filed by his mother, Murali had purchased the plot in 2018 from sellers connected to a neighbouring family. Since then, the neighbours — Usha and Shashi Nambiar — had allegedly threatened him on various grounds, which eventually led to his suicide.
The complaint stated that the Nambiars approached him repeatedly—multiple times over the past month—and demanded Rs 20 lakh from him without any explanation. When Murali refused to pay, the Nambiars, accompanied by some Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) staff, visited his building and allegedly harassed him. “They continued insisting that he must pay Rs 20 lakh. He shared his distress with me,” his mother mentioned in the complaint.
The complaint further added that the alleged harassment had left Murali severely distressed over the past few days. He had reportedly shared his concerns with his family before leaving home around 6 am. on Wednesday. “He went to the second floor of the building and, unable to bear the mental torture from Usha Nambiar and Shashi Nambiar and the threats from Usha Nambiar, he hanged himself using the iron hook meant for a ceiling fan and died.” The body was first discovered by a carpenter who arrived for work around 9:30 am.
Following the incident, Whitefield Police registered an FIR against Usha and Shashi Nambiar for alleged harassment and abetment of suicide, based on the family’s complaint. Further investigation is underway.
