The Delhi government opened 100 such canteens at several locations across the city on Thursday. The canteens were launched to mark the 101st birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
New Delhi: What if those who find it difficult to eat two square meals a day every day due to financial constraints, get a wholesome meal just for Rs 5. Yes, you read it right. At the Atal canteens, launched in Delhi today, a fulfilling meal, consisting of dal, rice, chapati, vegetable, and pickle will cost only Rs 5.
The Delhi government opened 100 such canteens at several locations across the city on Thursday. The canteens were launched to mark the 101st birth anniversary of late prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Launching the Atal canteens, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the move aimed at providing food with dignity to the poor, labourers, and low-income families who struggle to afford regular meals. The BJP promised the subsidy meal canteens in its Delhi election manifesto.
"Atal Canteen will become the soul of Delhi, a place where no one should have to sleep hungry," she said.
Where are Atal canteens opened in Delhi?
The Delhi government opened doors to 45 Atal canteens spread across Delhi - RK Puram, Jangpura, Shalimar Bagh, Greater Kailash, Rajouri Garden, Narela, Bawana, among other locations. The remaining 55 canteens will be inaugurated in the coming days.
Timings of Atal canteens, menu
Two meals will be served at these canteens in a day, including dal and rice, roti and vegetables - lunch between 11 am and 4 pm and dinner between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm. Each Atal Canteen is expected to cater to nearly 1,000 people daily.
