Hyderabad: The Minister for Roads and Buildings, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, along with several Congress MPs, met with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, in New Delhi in March 2025. They sought the Union Cabinet and the Public-Private Partnership Appraisal Committee's approvals for the northern corridor of the Regional Ring Road (RRR).

Additionally, they met with Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu to thank him for the approval of the Mamnoor Airport in Warangal district. The group urged him to expedite the pre-approval process for other airports in the Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Jakranpally (Adilabad), Peddapalli, and Nizamabad districts.

After the meeting, Komatireddy informed the media that Gadkari assured them that the preliminary work related to the RRR would be completed and that construction would begin within two months. The Civil Aviation Minister also stated that the development of Mamnoor Airport is expected to be completed in two and a half years, as reported by Times of India.

During their meeting with Gadkari, the delegation, led by Komatireddy, urged him to speed up the signing of the Economic Tripartite Agreement and to secure the necessary forest clearances for the northern region, where tenders worth Rs 7,100 crore have been issued across five packages. They also asked for the finalization of the alignment for the southern part of the RRR, which links the Choutuppal, Amangal, Shadnagar, and Sangareddy routes.

"We urged Union Minister Gadkari to think about building a 62-km elevated corridor along the 187-km Hyderabad-Srisailam highway (NH 765), which runs through the Amrabad Tiger Reserve. Getting forest permissions is vital to moving forward with this project. We pointed out that the central government had proposed the Hyderabad-Srisailam Elevated Corridor to make it easier for devotees travelling to the Srisailam temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, also known as Dakshina Kashi, with the survey set to be completed in June 2024," he said.

Komatireddy also asked Gadkari to greenlight five ropeway projects under the Parvat Mala scheme to connect various tourist spots. "Telangana state should definitely be included in this scheme. The state boasts significant religious and tourist destinations, and ropeway projects at Yadagirigutta Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Bhuvanagiri Fort, and Hanuman Konda in Nalgonda town are crucial," he added.

The Minister also emphasized the need to finish the six-laning of the Hyderabad-Vijayawada stretch of NH 65, along with the four-laning of the Hyderabad-Manneguda stretch of NH 163.

Other leaders who were present with Komatireddy were Khammam MP Ramasayam Raghuram Reddy, Nagarkurnool MP Mallu Ravi, Peddapalli MP Gaddam Vamsi Krishna, Bhuvanagiri MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy, Nalgonda MP Kundur Raghuveer Reddy, and several senior officials, including R&B Special Chief Secretary Vikas Raj and Special Secretary Dasari Harichandana.

Warangal Airport project

Warangal Airport also known by another name Mamnoor Airport was the largest airport in India and was operational until 1981. The state government is currently working on reviving the airport to start instate services. The revival project is expected to be completed by 2030. For the proposed airport, a land area of around 1000 acres will be utilised.

In September 2020, the Telangana Government put forward a plan to acquire an extra 200 acres of land around the airport to help bring it back to life. On top of that, they also aimed to get the airport included in the Indian Government's UDAN scheme by reaching out to the Ministry of Civil Aviation with a formal request. The state government approved Rs 205 crore in November 2024 for land acquisition of around 280 acres for the development of the airport. In October 2024, the project also got a No Objection Certificate from GMR Group, which manages Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has informed the Telangana government that the development of Warangal International Airport will take place in Phase 2, allowing for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) operations for A320-type aircraft. The planned runway will stretch 2.9 kilometres, with the total project cost estimated at Rs 592 crores, based on the assumption that work will start in 2021 and wrap up by March 2024.

On February 28, 2025, the Central Government gave the green light for the development and operation of Warangal International Airport. This approval also came with the decision to lift the exclusivity clause that had previously limited the construction of new airports within a 150-kilometre radius of Hyderabad International Airport.
