New Delhi: The Navi Mumbai traffic department has announced traffic restrictions and diversions on the Sion-Panvel Highway. This diversion has been announced owing to construction of an underground tunnel by CIDCO. This tunnel is to be built between Kharghar Gurudwara and Juinagar railway station, according to a report in the Lokmat Times.

Underground tunnel aims to ease congestion on route

The underground tunnel is being built to ease congestion on the route and cut travel time between Kharghar, Belapur and Turbhe. The travel time for commuters is expected to decrease by nearly 30 minutes, once this route becomes operational.

The road being built is called the Kharghar–Turbhe link road and its length is 1.763 kilometers. The project costs approximately Rs 2,100 crore and it is expected to cut commute time between Kharghar, Belapur and Turbhe from 40 minutes to just 10 minutes. It will also ease pressure on the Sion-Panvel Highway.

The traffic restrictions are in place from November 20 this year to November 16, 2026. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Tirupati Kakade, talking to a news outlet said that the Pune-bound service road from Sawan Knowledge Park to Delta Stellar Company in Shiravane will be one way for the time period.

He also informed that the underpass between Shiravane village entrance towards MIDC will be closed for the entire year. Traffic will be re-routed through Punyagiri MIDC and the Sion-Panvel Highway. Vehicles coming from Shiravane village will use either the Juinagar Railway Station service road or the LP Bridge service road, depending upon their destination. The vehicles coming from Nerul and Shiravane may also use the Mumbai-bound lane.

The traffic diversions will help in smooth traffic movement along the stretch, till the time construction of the underground tunnel is in progress, according to senior police officials of Mumbai traffic wing.
