New Delhi: There is a new detail about the Mandale Metro Depot from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The MMRDA took to X and shared new details about the depot through several posts. In those posts, MMRDA highlighted the technology, scale and environmental features of reportedly one of the most advanced metro depots in Asia. The Mandale facility can support Metro Line 2B and is expected to play an important role in Mumbai’s next phase of urban mobility.
The depot in Mandale will be the first elevated and largest depot of the Mumbai Metro. It will cover 32 hectares and have two levels with an accommodation capacity of 72 rakes. Additionally, it will service the elevated Metro Line 2B, a 23.6 km route from DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd, connecting the western suburbs to the city's eastern part.
A G plus 3 Depot Control Centre will anchor the Mandale Metro Depot and will act as its central nervous system. It will operate 24 hours a day and keep a watch on the movement of trains, maintenance schedules, and safety systems. According to reports quoting MMRDA officials, there has been round-the-clock technological surveillance to maintain punctuality when it comes to operations across the network.
Also, the depot will have a 175 kilolitre per day capacity effluent and sewage treatment system for recycling water, which will be used to clean the premises. Also, the site has over 100 kilometres of underground utilities for the internal functions of the depot. Moreover, the site also has noise and dust suppression systems for minimal impact on the surrounding places.
The Mandale Depot will have a metro test track of 965 metres, the longest in India, where trains can be tested before making them part of daily passenger service. The depot will support metro services and ensure Mumbai's transportation upgrade as it will enhance metro connectivity significantly. Constructed after overcoming several challenges like coastal soil conditions, “The People’s Depot” will become one of the integral additions to Mumbai's transportation system.
