Noida: The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (Yeida) has announced that plans are underway to build a link road between the upcoming Noida International Airport (NIA) and National Highway 34. The decision was taken after the directive by the Uttar Pradesh government to provide multi-modal connectivity in the region ahead of the airport’s launch scheduled in April.
NH-34 starts from Uttarakhand’s Gangotri Dham and passes via Haridwar, Meerut, and Bulandshahr, few other key cities and then culminates at Lakhnadon in Madhya Pradesh. Yeida and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have discussed the alignment of the proposed link road.
Shailendra Bhatia, officer on special duty of Yeida, said, “We discussed the details of the new link road and decided to work on it. We asked the NHAI to prepare a DPR (detailed project report) and then have a discussion on it. Once the DPR is submitted, the alignment, budget and the length of the link road will be finalised.”
The highway authority will conduct site visits and finalise the alignment planned on old Sikandrabad-Jewar Road. The proposed link road will connect with NH-34 in Sikandrabad. Bhatia added that the areas along the old road have already been notified to prevent illegal constructions. However, the route is yet to be finalised as the exact alignment can only be finalised after the detailed project report is prepared by NHAI, he added.
“The NHAI has a mandate to acquire land and build the route. We will support NHAI in this project because our priority is to link the airport with nearby cities and national highways,” said Bhatia. Besides this link road, Yeida is also exploring other options to enhance connectivity in the region. Bhatia added that another project is in plans to link the upcoming airport in Jewar with Garhmukteshwar directly via a new road. The alignment for this route also is yet to be finalised, he added.
Yeida is committed to connect Noida Airport via several modes of transport and build a robust multi-modal connectivity. The authority plans to connect the Jewar Airport with all Delhi-NCR cities via multiple transport options like metro, rapid rail, tram, and roadways. Regarding metro and RRTS and tram, a plan has not been finalised yet. At present, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), Delhi Metro, and other concerned agencies are exploring options to link the upcoming airport with the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi.
The authority also plans to link the Noida International Airport to the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS (Namo Bharat rapid rail) that passes through Ghaziabad, and also via Delhi Metro to the Delhi Airport directly, apart from the new link roads. “The construction work of the 31 km link road to connect Noida Airport with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is at an advance stage. We are also planning link roads to connect other important roads with it,” said Bhatia.
With an aim to ensure smooth flow of traffic near the much-awaited Noida International Airport in Jewar, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police has asked the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) to widen the roads in the region. The airport is set to starts commercial operations soon, post which the roads will see a massive surge in vehicular traffic.
The airport is being developed in two phases – two runways will become operational in the first phase while after the completion of the second phase, a total of five runways will be operational. After the launch of the first phase, the airport is likely to handle around 70 million passengers. The number will surge to 225 million after the launch of the second phase. Keeping these numbers in mind, the city police said that the traffic pressure on the roads will increase.
The police added that the commercial, domestic, and long distance traffic load is already very high on the stretches between Noida, Greater Noida, Bulandshahr, Hapur, Mathura, Aligarh, and areas surrounding the airport. “Keeping the surge in traffic flow in mind, the widening of roads near the Noida Airport is essential for smooth traffic flow for both airport users and local residents,” said Laxmi Singh, police commissioner, Gautam Buddh Nagar.
