4 killed, 9 injured after Mumbais BEST bus runs over pedestrians

Following the incident, a rescue and relief team and police personnel reached the spot to manage the situation and clear traffic in the area.

Mumbai: At least four people, including three women, were killed and nine others injured after a BEST bus crashed into pedestrians in Mumbai on Monday night. The injured people, including eight men, were admitted to the hospital for treatment after the accident. The bus, operated by BEST, short for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport, hit the pedestrians while it was reversing. The incident happened in Mumbai's Bhandup.

Following the incident, a rescue and relief team and police personnel reached the spot to manage the situation and clear traffic in the area. Senior officials also rushed to the site to help with emergency response teams. According to the Mumbai Police, the bus lost control before it hit pedestrians.

An investigation has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances that led to the accident, including whether mechanical failure or other factors were involved.

Speaking to the media, Maharashtra DCP Hemraj Singh Rajput said, "At around 9:35 PM, a bus accident occurred near Bhandup West Railway Station. The bus ran over pedestrians, injuring 13. We admitted all the pedestrians to the hospital. Out of them, four people died, including three women and a man. Among the nine injured, there are eight men and one woman. The bus driver is currently in police custody and is part of the ongoing investigation..."

Asked if the driver of the bus was drunk, the senior police officer said, "It is yet to be ascertained. More details will emerge in the course of further investigation. Mechanical and technical inspection of the bus will also be done."

CM Fanavis announces financial aid

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the accident and said that the state government will provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the kins of the deceased.

"The tragic incident in which 4 people lost their lives in a fatal accident near Bhandup railway station in Mumbai is extremely unfortunate. I pay my heartfelt tribute to them. In this incident, 9 people were injured, and I pray at the feet of God for their speedy recovery," he wrote on X in Marathi.
