New Delhi: In a move to lower temporary migration and address fraud linked to student visas, Canada continues to restrict the number of international students coming to the country. The shocking news is that three out of four applications by Indian students to study at Canadian universities were rejected by the government.
According to the data, 74 per cent of study applications by Indians were rejected compared with 32 per cent in August 2023. The overall refusal rate across international students stands at an average of 40 per cent. According to Reuters, the rejection rate for Chinese applicants was 24 per cent in August 2025.

The Canadian government has tightened student visa rules over the last two years. Students were asked to show proof of over CAD 20,000 in funds, besides sharing the details of their study plans and meet tougher language requirements. It has also closed the 'Student Direct Stream,' which once allowed faster visa approvals
The immigration department has cracked down the students who are pursuing in Canada with fake study permit applications with the help of fraud detection efforts. In 2023, a total of 1550 fake study permit applications have been linked to forged acceptance letters.
A total of 47,175 foreign students in Canada violated the visa rules and were living in the country illegally, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reported. The shocking part is that nearly 20,000 Indian students were reported as 'no-shows' during spring 2024. This has not only raised questions about the monitoring system for international students but also the admission work of its universities. India is followed by China with 4,200 students in the list.
