New Delhi: Kerala witnessed a cinematic stampede on Friday (July 8) as advance bookings for Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie sent fans racing to theatres. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the action spectacle is set for release on August 14 and has already set the box office abuzz.
The frenzy was captured in a video posted by Sun Pictures on X (formerly Twitter), showing hundreds gathered outside a Thrissur theatre.
The caption read, “Massive fan craze storms theatres for just the advance booking of #Coolie in Thrissur, Kerala!” As soon as the gates opened, fans surged forward in a rush to secure the coveted first-day, first-show tickets, some even pushing past one another to get ahead.
Take a look!
According to box office tracker Sacnilk, the response has been nothing short of phenomenal. In just a few hours, nearly 200,000 tickets were sold in Kerala, with an estimated 50,000 tickets being sold every hour. Advance sales have already generated Rs 3 crore in the state alone, and the numbers are expected to rise further in the coming days.
The excitement isn’t limited to India. Overseas markets have shown equally impressive traction, with bookings reaching approximately Rs 30 crore on the opening day.
Produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner, Coolie boasts an ensemble cast that extends beyond its superstar lead. Alongside Rajinikanth, the film features Nagarjuna Akkineni, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Sathyaraj. Rachita Ram, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, Kanna Ravi, Monisha Blessy, and Kaali Venkat appear in supporting roles, with Aamir Khan making a special cameo.
The film is slated to clash at the box office with Ayan Mukerji’s War 2, headlined by Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR. Yet, judging by the early ticketing chaos, Coolie appears well-armed to hold its ground.
