New Delhi: Coolie, the highly anticipated action thriller headlined by Rajinikanth and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has been drawing massive attention globally. The film will premiere on August 14 and is poised to become one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year. Notably, the pre-release bookings already exceed $2 million across international markets.
Despite being slated for a box office clash with War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, Coolie has taken the lead in advance sales, particularly for premiere shows in the United States. According to industry sources, over 100,000 tickets have been snapped up globally, with North America alone contributing upwards of $1 million in revenue. The trend has also been mirrored in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, the UK, and Australia, where strong first-day-first-show (FDFS) occupancy has been recorded.
In India, pre-sales are scheduled to commence on August 8 at 10:30 AM, beginning with Kerala, as confirmed by regional distributor HM Associates. Given Rajinikanth’s popularity in the region, exhibitors are preparing for high footfall, especially over the Independence Day weekend.
Ticketing platforms like Paytm, BookMyShow, and District will handle online reservations for the film in multiple languages, Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu, while offline sales at major multiplex chains and single-screen cinemas are also expected to see brisk business.
The ensemble cast of Coolie features Rajinikanth in the lead role as Deva, supported by Pooja Hegde, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj. Bollywood icon Aamir Khan is confirmed to appear in a brief cameo as Dahaa. The film has been produced on a massive budget of Rs 350 crore, although the makers have kept official numbers under wraps.
Social media chatter has been rife with speculation, particularly following the trailer’s release, hinting at possible sci-fi and time-travel elements woven into the action-heavy narrative. The soundtrack by Anirudh Ravichander has further fuelled fan excitement.

Film insiders have noted that Coolie is not a remake, nor does it belong to Lokesh’s Cinematic Universe (LCU), which includes Kaithi, Vikram, and Leo. Instead, it’s touted as an original story with mass appeal.
