Mumbai: Samay Raina, the stand-up comedian, who made a comeback despite the fiasco that was caused by his YouTube show India's Got Latent, issued an apology to those with disabilities on his birthday. The apology was shared on Instagram by Samay. He promised to be more mindful.
“Today is my birthday, and instead of celebrating just myself, I want to use this day—the most special day of the year for me—to apologize to the people with disabilities," wrote the comedian. He added, "We, Samay Raina, Vipul Goyal, Sonali Thakkar, Nishant Tanwar, Balraj Ghai, deeply regret the pain caused due to our show. Going forward, we will be more mindful and do our best to spread awareness about the challenges faced by the community. Your strength inspires us to grow. With respect and gratitude, Samay, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Ghai, Sonali Thakkar, Nishant Tanwar."
The post comes after the comedian faced massive criticism for his insensitive jokes. During one of the episodes of his show, Samay made fun of a charity drive that was organised for a two-month-old baby who needed an injection worth Rs 16 crore. In addition to the backlash faced online, Samay was also asked by the Supreme Court to apologise for the insensitive and inconsiderate remarks he had made.
In an affidavit submitted in court, Samay stated that he had no intentions to look down on anybody.
He also promised to make "inclusive and sensitive content" and stated that he would adhere to “better conduct, content sensitivity, and legal compliance".
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court had asked five social media influencers to issue public apologies for mocking vulnerable groups.
In spite of the setback, Samay made a comeback through his tour, Samay Raina Is Alive And Unfiltered. The live comedy shows have been a massive success with sold-out shows. Sharing his gratitude online, he wrote, "Mumbai, I love you so much. You have given me everything... I am overwhelmed, I’m grateful to every single person who came out to see me....God has been kind.”
