Mumbai: With O’Romeo gearing up for its theatrical release on February 13, Shahid Kapoor is back in familiar creative territory. The actor is reuniting with filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj nearly a decade after their last collaboration, and the excitement is evident.

In a candid chat with TV9, Shahid reflected on his journey, his relationship with complex characters, and watching his younger brother Ishaan Khatter carve his own path.

Shahid, who has long gravitated towards layered and morally grey roles, made it clear that complexity has never intimidated him. “I was doing grey characters as far back as 2009. Kaminey, Haider, Udta Punjab – all of them have had me playing complex characters and I never had issues with that,” he said.

When asked whether such demanding roles take an emotional toll, Shahid offered a sharp, no-nonsense perspective. “The most heaviness and pain come from your most intimate relationships in life, and the same is true for acting. The characters I love the most are the most difficult to do. They don’t weigh me down, they help me fly,” he explained. At the same time, he stressed the importance of emotional boundaries. “A character’s residue might remain in you, but you have to disconnect. That’s extremely important.”

The actor also addressed the growing conversation around actors seeking therapy for intense roles, responding with candour and a hint of dry humour. “When I hear actors saying they went to therapists and all, I find it funny. We are professionals. There are people doing more difficult jobs than ours, yet they don’t talk about going to a therapist,” he said. Shahid added that knowing how to separate work from personal life is part of being a professional. “You should never come home with baggage… You shouldn’t start behaving abnormally. I find that very funny.”

Turning to O’Romeo, the film is positioned as a major Valentine’s Day weekend release. Shahid stars as Hussain Ustara, alongside Triptii Dimri as Afsha. The ensemble cast includes Nana Patekar, Vikrant Massey, Tamannaah Bhatia, Disha Patani and Farida Jalal.
