New Delhi: Veteran actress and singer Sulakshana Pandit, a cherished figure of Hindi cinema, left an unforgettable mark with her talent and charming presence. She passed away on November 6 at the age of 71, leaving fans and the film fraternity mourning her loss. Her prayer meet held at the ISKCON Temple in Juhu, Mumbai, drew many well-known stars who gathered to pay their respects and celebrate her life and legacy.
Sulakshana Pandit was known not only for her acting but also for her melodious voice, which touched the hearts of many. Her family, friends, and fellow artists came together to honour her memory with love and emotion.
Veteran actress and playback singer Sulakshana Pandit passed away on November 6 at the age of 71. Her prayer meet was held on Monday at the ISKCON Temple in Juhu, Mumbai, where many well-known personalities from the film and music industry gathered to pay their last respects. Sulakshana's sister Vijayta Pandit appeared visibly emotional at the service, while her brother, music composer Jatin Pandit, also emotionally joined the event.
Several Bollywood stars attended the prayer meet quietly to offer their condolences. These included veteran actor Jeetendra, actors Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff, along with his son Tiger Shroff, and singers Udit Narayan and Javed Ali. Actress-singer Padmini Kolhapure and actor Ranjeet were also seen honouring Sulakshana.
Speaking to PTI, Sulakshana’s brother Lalit Pandit revealed the circumstances around her passing. He said, "She had been unwell for a few days and complained of difficulty in breathing. She passed away due to cardiac arrest around 7 pm. She had complained of breathlessness and seemed a bit unwell. We were taking her to Nanavati hospital, but she died before we could reach the hospital."
Sulakshana made her acting debut in the 1975 film Uljhan opposite Sanjeev Kumar. Her charming screen presence made her one of the promising actresses of the 1970s and early 1980s. She worked alongside big stars like Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, and Vinod Khanna in films such as Sankoch, Hera Pheri, Khandaan, and Dharam Khanta. She also lent her talents to Bengali cinema, starring opposite Uttam Kumar in the film Bandie.
Alongside acting, Sulakshana Pandit was a gifted playback singer, singing in multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Oriya, and Gujarati. Some of her popular songs include Tu Hi Saagar Tu Hi Kinara, Pardesiya Tere Desh Mein, Bekrar Dil Tut Gaya, and Saat Samundar Paar, which have become timeless melodies cherished by music lovers.
Her versatile talent, graceful personality, and musical gifts have left a lasting legacy in Indian cinema and music, fondly remembered by her fans and colleagues alike. The film industry continues to mourn the loss of this multi-talented star.
