Actor Varun Dhawan opened up on Thursday about a severe injury he got while shooting an intense battle sequence for Border 2. He plays Colonel Hoshiar Singh Dahiya in the war drama. Dhawan smashed his tailbone into a rock to avoid hitting the camera. In an Instagram post, Dhawan shared, "The worst injury I ever got on Border 2. I smashed my tailbone into a rock when I tried to avoid banging into the camera." He added, "It was the worst pain I’ve ever felt. I sustained a hairline fracture on the tailbone, which I feel I’m still healing from. Thankful to my team for helping me continue that day. I could barely walk, but we kept going. Grateful for the journey (sic)."

The pain did not stop him. His team helped, and he pushed through despite barely walking. Actor Ali Mughal, who played the Pakistani counterpart in the scene, recalled the moment in a press statement. "This happened during an intense fight sequence. While shooting in the trenches, Varun was supposed to fall into the boxes but instead hit the wall, injuring his lower back badly," Mughal said. Mughal praised Dhawan's spirit. He noted, "The shoot had to be stopped, and even when he returned in pain, he was determined to finish the scene. That truly showed his dedication." Mughal learned from it, too. "I learned a lot from him that day — the fight looks so real because we both went through immense physical pain, from the rocky surface to his injury. However, despite its strong worldwide numbers, industry experts believe the film may have lost a significant chunk of potential revenue due to its non-release in Gulf countries.In an exclusive interaction with TV9 English, Suniel Wadhwa, Co-Founder and Director of Karmic Films, explained why the Gulf region can no longer be treated as a secondary overseas market for Indian cinema. “The Gulf countries have become a structurally critical overseas market for Indian cinema, not a peripheral one,” he said, placing Border 2’s situation in sharp perspective.

Border 2 ban in Gulf countries: Does it affect the business?

Using Gadar 2 as a benchmark, Wadhwa pointed out that the Gulf contributed nearly 17 per cent of its total overseas earnings, translating to about $1.32 million. “At current exchange rates, Border 2’s non-release in the Gulf likely resulted in a direct theatrical loss of Rs 12–22 crore, depending on performance potential,” he added. According to him, this is a substantial figure, especially for a film that is performing strongly across other international territories.The impact becomes even clearer when compared with other large-scale releases. Wadhwa cited Dhurandhar, which also skipped the Gulf market. “Dhurandhar released without access to the Gulf despite already clocking $28 million overseas excluding the region. Based on historical patterns, the Gulf typically contributes 15–18 per cent of overseas revenues,” he said. This suggests a missed opportunity of $5–8 million, or roughly Rs 45–72 crore, for that film.

Beyond immediate box office numbers, Wadhwa warned of wider consequences. “When high-demand films skip the Gulf theatrically, it doesn’t just affect box-office numbers — it also increases exposure to unregulated consumption, which can have knock-on effects across other markets,” he explained. According to him, the cases of Border 2 and Dhurandhar clearly show how missing the Gulf market can materially change a film’s global outcome.

Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 is a standalone sequel to JP Dutta’s 1997 classic Border. The narrative follows three young officers from different wings of the Indian armed forces: the Army’s Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya (Varun Dhawan), Air Force officer Nirmal Jit Singh (Diljit Dosanjh), and Navy lieutenant Mahendra (Ahan Shetty). Overseeing them is Lieutenant Colonel Fateh Singh Kaler, played by Sunny Deol, the sole connective tissue to the original Border. Fateh is less a character and more a symbol here: of authority, sacrifice, and that unmistakable Deol-era masculinity that cinema rarely manufactures anymore.The screenplay, co-written by Singh and Sumit Arora, smartly divides the film into two halves. The first focuses on training, friendships and domestic lives. It’s easily the stronger section. The banter feels lived-in, the relationships breathe, and the film allows its characters to exist as people before turning them into martyrs. There’s warmth here, especially in scenes involving the officers’ wives, which add emotional ballast without overstaying their welcome.

Once the war begins in earnest, the film shifts gears, and not always smoothly. The decision to portray the conflict across land, air and sea is ambitious, but execution proves uneven. The action set-pieces are loud and elaborate, yet strangely familiar. Tanks roll in, bullets fly, explosions erupt, and still, there’s a sense of déjà vu. The grammar of these sequences is borrowed from decades of war films, and repetition dulls the impact.That said, the climax restores some balance. It’s emotionally charged, efficiently staged, and reminds you why these stories continue to resonate. Patience, in this case, is rewarded.

Performance-wise, Sunny Deol remains the film’s emotional anchor. Age hasn’t diminished his screen presence, and he delivers both the booming speeches and quieter moments with conviction. It may not touch the cult stature of Delhi Belly, but its comic ambition clearly runs on the same wavelength. This is fearless, offbeat humour that refuses to dilute its madness. Descriptions of the film as absurd, spoofy and outrageously unrestrained ring true, as it leans into its delirious tone and sees it through without hesitation.

This easily ranks among his best performances, perhaps because he wears multiple hats as writer, director and actor.Mona Singh is both mild and fierce, giving Mama an unexpected emotional texture. Mithila Palkar brings sincerity, Sharib Hashmi anchors the chaos with grounded humour, and Shrushti Tawade adds playful unpredictability.A cameo by Imran Khan surprisingly overshadows his uncle’s appearance, and it’s a welcome detour.

Where’s the Flaw?

The film’s biggest limitation lies in its comedy-to-laugh ratio. While the comic timing is sharp, there aren’t enough laugh-out-loud moments. Some jokes feel smarter on paper than in execution. At times, the film mistakes quirk for impact. It’s decent, enjoyable and inventive, but not consistently hilarious. In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Zubeen Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg, sister Palmee Borthakur and uncle Manoj Kumar Borthakur broke months of silence to place before the public a chronological account of events, investigations and legal steps taken since the singer died in Singapore on September 19, 2025.The family said the statement was issued “in the spirit of transparency, dignity, and truth,” stressing that their pursuit of accountability has been continuous, cross-border and unwavering.“From the moment we lost Zubeen Garg on September 19, 2025, our family has lived in a state of shock, grief and profound personal trauma,” Garima said. “The loss was sudden and emotionally paralysing. In those first critical days, we were not in a condition to immediately initiate legal proceedings.”According to the family, it was only after videos from the yacht outing in Singapore surfaced on social media and television that serious doubts emerged about the nature of the incident. “From those visuals, it became clear that the death was not normal, and several suspicions arose. We immediately lodged an FIR to initiate formal legal action,” the statement said.The family noted that the Singapore Police Force had independently initiated an inquiry soon after the incident and remained in communication with them. They also highlighted the active role played by the Indian High Commission in Singapore in coordinating legal and medical procedures, including the post-mortem examination.“To respect the integrity of the investigation, we consciously chose not to publicise our communications with Singapore Police or upload documents on social media,” the family said, adding that even the post-mortem report was formally routed through the Indian High Commission to maintain sovereign coordination between the two countries.Once Garima’s medical condition permitted, the family lodged a formal FIR with the Assam CID. The Assam government subsequently constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), whose chief and senior officers travelled to Singapore as part of the probe. After months of investigation, Assam Police filed a charge sheet running over 2,500 pages and, based on the evidence collected, invoked sections related to murder.The family stressed that they have remained in constant engagement with authorities in both countries. “We have never withdrawn, paused or diluted our pursuit of truth,” the statement said, adding that they have cooperated fully through written submissions, video conferencing, and personal appearances whenever required.A significant development came on January 14, when Manoj Kumar Borthakur submitted a detailed statement before the Singapore Coroner’s Court, assisted by two state prosecutors. The submission raised a series of factual questions, including the planning of the yacht outing, Zubeen Garg’s physical and medical condition, safety measures on board, the circumstances in which he entered the sea, the response of those present when he showed visible distress, the adequacy and timing of medical assistance, and the basis for any preliminary finding of “no foul play.”“These questions arise naturally and unavoidably when a life ends suddenly under unclear circumstances,” the family said, describing them as both a right and a duty.In their appeal, the family urged the Indian government and the Assam government to closely monitor the proceedings in the Singapore Coroner’s Court, take all necessary diplomatic and legal steps to ensure that every relevant fact is placed before the court, pursue expeditious prosecution in India based on the charge sheet already filed, and ensure that jurisdictional complexities do not lead to delay or dilution.“We wish to state unequivocally that our family has explored every lawful avenue available. Party members stressed that unrestricted circulation on social media intensified their concerns.
