Banks to remain closed for 16 days across India in January 2026; check RBI holiday list

As per the RBI calendar, regular weekly holidays will fall on January 4, 11, 18 and 25 (Sundays) and January 10 and 24 (second and fourth Saturdays), when banks will remain shut across the country.

Banks will be closed on different days in various states due to regional festivals and observances.

New Delhi: Banks across India will remain closed for a total of 16 days in January 2026, according to the holiday calendar released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The closures include four Sundays, the second and fourth Saturdays, and nine state-specific holidays, in addition to Republic Day.

As per the RBI calendar, regular weekly holidays will fall on January 4, 11, 18 and 25 (Sundays) and January 10 and 24 (second and fourth Saturdays), when banks will remain shut across the country.

Regional festivals and observances

Apart from these, banks will be closed on different days in various states due to regional festivals and observances. On January 1, banks will remain shut in cities including Aizawl, Chennai, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata and Shillong on account of New Year's Day and Gaan-Ngai. On January 2, banks will be closed in Aizawl, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram for New Year celebrations and Mannam Jayanti.

Banks in Lucknow will remain closed on January 3 for Hazrat Ali's birth anniversary, while Kolkata will observe a holiday on January 12 for Swami Vivekananda Jayanti. On January 14, banks will be closed in cities such as Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati and Itanagar due to Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu.

Several southern states will observe bank holidays on January 15 for Pongal, Uttarayan Punyakaal, Magh Sankranti and Makar Sankranti, affecting cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad and Vijayawada. Banks in Chennai will also remain closed on January 16 for Thiruvalluvar Day and on January 17 for Uzhavar Thirunal.

Customers will be able to carry out transactions through online banking

On January 23, banks will be closed in Agartala, Bhubaneswar and Kolkata on account of Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti, Saraswati Puja (Shri Panchami) and Vasant Panchami. On January 26, Republic Day, banks will remain closed across most parts of the country.

Despite the closures, customers will be able to carry out transactions through online banking platforms such as UPI, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS, as well as through ATMs, which will continue to function during bank holidays.
