'Not the right time...': How SC responded to Ashoka University prof Mahmudabad's travel request

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to allow Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad to travel abroad while his petition challenging FIRs filed by the Haryana Police over his social media posts on Operation Sindoor remains under investigation. A Bench of Justices Surya Kant, Ujjal Bhuyan and NK Singh briefly took up Mahmudabad 's plea, in which he also sought the return of his passport -- surrendered earlier as a condition of the interim bail granted to him by the court. When Advocate Nizam Pasha, appearing for Mahmudabad, raised the request, Justice Surya Kant responded with a wry remark: "This is not the right time to travel." The matter was then adjourned. Mahmudabad is facing two FIRs by Haryana Police over posts linked to Operation Sindoor, the military response to the Pahalgam terror attack. In October, the Supreme Court granted him interim bail and ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the content of the two posts that...

UK visa ban for Indians? Britain rolls out Trump-style rules for countries blocking deportations

New Delhi: The United Kingdom has announced strict new immigration measures, including Trump-style visa bans on countries that refuse to accept the return of their deported citizens. India is among the nations identified as having low cooperation and could face similar restrictions over the next year, according to British media reports. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the UK would no longer grant visas to nationals of countries that fail to take back illegal immigrants and convicted criminals. Announcing the first set of bans targeting Angola, Namibia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mahmood said foreign governments must accept the return of their own citizens or lose the "privilege" of entering Britain. The Home Office said these countries had repeatedly obstructed deportations by delaying paperwork and requiring individuals to sign documents, enabling them to block their own removal. It noted that thousands of illegal migrants and criminals from these nations were currently...

India–US trade deal nears first-phase closure; tariff relief likely soon: Report

New Delhi: The first phase of the proposed India–US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) is "nearing closure" and will address the 50 per cent tariffs imposed on Indian goods by the Donald Trump administration, news agency PTI reported citing a senior government official. The initial tranche of the agreement will also focus on resolving American market access concerns that have remained a sticking point over the last two years. The United States currently levies a 25 per cent reciprocal tariff and an additional 25 per cent penalty on Indian products, linked to India 's purchase of discounted Russian crude -- which Trump said is being used for Moscow 's war in Ukraine. The official said the tariff issue is central to the negotiations and must be resolved in the first tranche, otherwise "the agreement would have no meaning". He added that the part of the package addressing reciprocal tariffs is "more or less near closure" and that an announcement will be made on a mutually agreed...
