New Delhi: A popular cafe in Bengaluru has sparked a social media debate after putting up a notice banning "long meetings" on its premises, warning customers of a Rs 1,000 charge for every additional hour spent beyond the stipulated time.
The post, captioned, "Saw this notice posted at an eatery in Bengaluru", garnered nearly 40,000 views.
The notice, which has gone viral on social media, read, "No meetings allowed. Meetings lasting more than 1 hour will be charged at Rs 1000 per hour." The cafe management said the move was prompted by customers occupying seats for hours after ordering just a cup of coffee, leaving no space for new patrons and impacting business.
The move has triggered mixed reactions. While several users supported the cafe's stance, arguing that prolonged occupancy hurts small businesses, others said Bengaluru's long commute times and small living spaces make cafes a convenient place to work.
"Cafes are meant for business, not as free co-working spaces," wrote one user. Others justified the decision amid rising rents and maintenance costs in the city.
Another user wrote, "Have seen this in so many eateries and cafes - people will sit, chat for hours and not buy any drinks or food. Feel sorry for cafe owners."
