19-year-old Bengaluru student blackmailed over private photos; cyber police probe

New Delhi: A 19-year-old college student in Bengaluru was allegedly blackmailed and extorted after private photographs she had earlier shared with her boyfriend were used by an unknown person to threaten her.

The victim, a student of a reputed private college in the city, lodged a complaint at the Central Division Cyber Crime Police Station, stating that she began receiving calls and messages from an unknown number containing her private photos, along with threats to make them public unless she paid money.

According to the complaint, the woman initially discussed the matter with a friend and, under pressure from the blackmailer, paid around Rs 1 lakh through the friend. However, the accused continued to demand more money, prompting her to approach the police.

She initially suspected her boyfriend's involvement, but preliminary investigation has ruled out his role in the incident, police said.

A case has been registered, and a detailed probe is underway using technical and digital evidence to trace the accused. Police have advised the public to exercise caution while sharing private images or personal information online.
