Barely clinging to life: In UP, caretakers confine man, his mentally challenged daughter; father dies of starvation

New Delhi: A spine-chilling incident has taken place in Uttar Pradesh's Mahoba district, where some people held a retired railway employee and his mentally challenged daughter captive and tortured them for five years. Eventually, the man died, and the incident sent shockwaves across the country.
The horrendous torture for five years
Omprakash Singh Rathore (70) was a retired senior railway clerk. His daughter, Rashmi (27), is mentally challenged. After Rathore's wife died in 2016, they moved to a separate house, and his brother, Amar Singh, has informed that the family hired Ram Prakash Kushwaha and his wife, Ramdevi, as caretakers.
The takeover of the house
According to Amar, the couple took over the entire house while Omprakash and his daughter lived in the lower rooms. The caretakers allegedly did not give the victims necessities, as Amar said, "Whenever relatives came to visit, the servant would make excuses and send them away, saying that Omprakash didn't want to meet anyone."
The family got to know about Omprakash's death on Monday. When relatives arrived at the house, they found the emaciated bodies of Omprakash and his daughter naked in a dark room, looking like an old woman due to starvation. Pushpa Singh Rathore, a relative, said, "There was no flesh left on her body; only a skeletal frame remained, barely clinging to life." The death of Omprakash, who once led a very dignified life, has shocked his neighbours. The family is currently taking care of Rashmi as the police are probing the heinous incident.
