Imran Khan’s sister allowed jail visit amid PTI protest threats

Imran Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, was permitted to meet the jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister at Adiala Jail on Tuesday evening, even as PTI members threatened mass protests across Rawalpindi despite restrictions. Her visit came amid intense speculation and rumours that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader had been murdered in custody, according to Geo News.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Uzma Khan dismissed the rumours and confirmed that Imran Khan was alive and in stable health. She alleged, however, that he was being held in solitary confinement and subjected to mental torture.

"Imran Khan is fine, his health is good. He has been kept in solitary confinement and he is being tortured mentally,” she said.

She added that Khan told her he has had no contact with anyone since his imprisonment. "He said they are mentally torturing him. He is angry and he said Asim Munir is responsible for everything that is happening,” she claimed.

Cricketing legend Sanath Jayasuriya thanks India, PM Modi as Cyclone Ditwah crisis deepens in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan cricket icon Sanath Jayasuriya has extended heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the people of India for standing firmly with Sri Lanka as the country reels from the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah. His message comes as India carries out one of its largest coordinated rescue and relief missions in Sri Lanka under Operation Sagar Bandhu.

The scale of the catastrophe remains immense. Putin's India visit set to put Su-57 jets and S-400 units on the table

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s two-day state visit to India, starting Thursday, is expected to see a fresh push in defence cooperation. New Delhi is likely to discuss the possible purchase of Russian Su-57 stealth fighters and additional S-400 air defence units, the same system deployed during Operation Sindoor. Moscow is also being considered for expanded co-production of military hardware, even as Russia’s share in India’s arms imports has dropped by half over the last 15 years. Despite this decline, it remains India’s largest defence supplier.

Putin will be in New Delhi for the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the Su-57 issue "certainly will be on the agenda” during the visit. Speaking at an online briefing hosted by Sputnik News, he responded to a question on whether Moscow had offered the stealth jets to India. Officials, however, describe these as preliminary discussions, with no immediate agreement expected during this round of talks.

Rahul Gandhi pokes fun at Parliament dog controversy

Adding a lighter and sharper twist to the political row triggered by Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury bringing her dog to Parliament, Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday quipped that "pets are allowed inside” the legislature.

Speaking to reporters in the Parliament complex, the Leader of the Opposition joked that a dog had somehow become "the main topic today”. Defending the animal at the centre of the fuss, he asked with a grin, "What did the poor dog do? Did it come here? Is it not allowed?”

When a journalist pointed out that while the rule book does not explicitly forbid pets, they are not permitted, Gandhi motioned towards the new Parliament building and delivered the punchline: "But they are allowed inside”, prompting peals of laughter from reporters gathered around him.

Scindia says Sanchar Saathi App is optional amid privacy concerns

Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has moved to calm privacy worries after the Centre’s directive on the Sanchar Saathi app triggered criticism over potential state surveillance. Speaking to reporters outside Parliament on Tuesday, the Union Telecom Minister stressed that activating the government-developed cybersecurity app is entirely optional and that users are free to delete it whenever they choose.

Scindia emphasised that the app does not involve spying, call monitoring or any form of intrusive tracking, adding that it becomes functional only once a user activates it. His clarification comes even as the Department of Telecommunications’ order to manufacturers clearly stated that the app’s features must not be disabled or restricted.

Government outlines two-phase plan for 2027 Census

The Union government has confirmed in Parliament that India’s next nationwide census will take place in two phases between April 2026 and February 2027. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said the first phase will cover house listing and housing surveys, while the second phase will record the population count. Snow bound and high altitude regions such as Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will follow an adjusted schedule due to accessibility challenges.

Rai also announced that the 2027 census will adopt a fully digital approach, with enumerators using mobile applications and residents having the option to self enumerate online. The government further confirmed that caste based enumeration will be included, following a decision by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs. Officials say the updated methodology and expanded dataset will help modernise demographic planning and improve the accuracy of national records.

Pakistan faces backlash over 'expired' aid sent to flood-hit Sri Lanka

Pakistan’s show of solidarity with flood-ravaged Sri Lanka has backfired after Colombo-bound relief packages appeared to display expiry dates that had already lapsed. The images, shared by Pakistan’s own High Commission on X, were meant to highlight Islamabad’s support but instead unleashed a wave of online criticism.

Within hours, social media users began pointing out that several boxes in the photographs carried labels reading "EXP: 10/2024”, sparking accusations that Pakistan had dispatched expired goods to a nation grappling with one of its most severe flooding emergencies in years. The post has since drawn sharp scrutiny, with many questioning the oversight and the quality of the humanitarian assistance being offered.
